Recreation and Adventure

Sport and adventure activities at Glenalmond highlight the values that we pursue more generally in the life of the school: good conduct, fair play, teamwork, responsibility and leadership. We open up challenges to be overcome and skills to be learnt.

We are fortunate to be where we are and to have the facilities that we do: a 9-hole (18-tee) golf course, squash courts, a climbing wall and extensive pitches; a sports complex with a gymnasium, a sports hall and a 25m swimming pool; and two floodlit, all-weather pitches are used as full-size hockey pitches in the Autumn and Spring, and as 18 tennis courts in the Summer. Few schools can match the range and quality of sporting participation that we offer; from lacrosse to athletics, basketball, fencing and cross-country, the option is there.

We also make the most of our natural surroundings - we sail on Loch Earn, canoe on the River Tay and climb on the local crags. The Third Form are given a solid grounding in outdoor skills; they learn navigation, camp craft, first-aid and mountain safety, culminating in a week-long camp and expedition. The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) thrives, while on Sundays the Munro Club sets out to the hills. Participation in the Three Peaks sailing and hill-running race, charity marathons, orienteering, snow-holing: all these challenges are eagerly accepted by our pupils.

In recent years up to one third of the Upper Sixth have succeeded in achieving the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award. That so many do tells a good deal about the determination and initiative of pupils at Glenalmond, and the preparation for success they receive.
