Partnership and Community

To be at Glenalmond is to be part of a genuine community. This is due to our distinct and secure location, which allows the pupils to learn and explore together without the distractions of urban living. Our size and friendly nature is important, too: we mix easily and get to know one another, we dine together and we see each other daily in Chapel. Then there is the sheer scale and variety of activities taking place and the feeling of involvement that everyone, including day pupils, experiences: there is always something to do and someone to do it with.

At every level we work to enhance social interaction. Much of this is based on a full programme of weekend activities. The Sixth Form has its own centre, The Moncrieff, which is open every lunchtime and evening and which bridges the social environments of school and university.

Community also means responsibility and we encourage pupils to take this on as they move up through the school. For some, this will eventually mean becoming a Prefect. Everyone, however, is expected to look after their peers.

There are frequent academic and adventure expeditions abroad and our senior sporting teams tour regularly. Every year, pupils and staff participate in our exchange with one of New England’s leading boarding schools, Brooks School, in Massachusetts. Closer to home, Community Service introduces the pupils to the lives of people in very different circumstances to their own. From weekly outings into nearby Perth, to field and theatre trips, there is always one group or another out exploring and getting to know the wider community.
