THE TOUR

Admissions

Visiting Glenalmond as a prospective parent

We believe parents deserve individual attention during their visit and so prospective parents are welcome to visit Glenalmond at any mutually convenient time, with or without their sons and daughters.  To arrange a visit, please telephone the Registrar on 01738 842056 or the Warden’s Secretary on 01738 842061.

The usual pattern of visits begins with your arrival at reception at ‘Front Arch’.  You will then have a meeting with the Warden, followed by a conducted tour of the College in the company of pupils (in term time) when you will be free to ask all sorts of questions.  The pupils will take you to all the key areas of the College, including the Chapel, the Library, the Science Centre, the Music School, sports halls and swimming pool.  Your visit will also involve seeing at least one Boarding House and the Housemaster/Housemistress of that House.  At some point during the tour you will also meet the Registrar who is well placed to answer a lot of technical questions about the process of application, as well as how the school works.

ADMISSION CRITERIA FOR ENTRY TO GLENALMOND

i)  General
The College welcomes applications for boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 18, although the main entry points to Glenalmond are at 12+, 13+ and 16+.  Boarding and Day pupils are accepted throughout the school.

The College is aware of its legal and moral obligations to pupils with disabilities and we make every effort to meet such needs.  Should a potential pupil have any particular special need or disability, parents are asked to contact the Registrar for further information.

The College has an Episcopalian foundation but welcomes pupils from a wide range of ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds and the needs of other religious groups and recognised faiths will be observed and supported.

ii)  Academic
In line with the College’s foundation and tradition, entry to Glenalmond is selective academically.  The process of academic selection at each of the entry points is explained below.

Second Form (Junior Entry)
A number of pupils are admitted each year into our ‘Junior Entry’.  The purpose of this entry is to bridge the gap between the final year of the Scottish Primary system (P7) and the early years of independent senior school.  We would not normally expect pupils in Preparatory Schools to enter Glenalmond by this route.  There is a reduced fee for this year (see page 5 for further details).

Academic selection to the Second Form is by our own assessment, which involves basic tests in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning.  These tests are taken in February, although they can be offered at other times by arrangement (contact the Registrar).

Pupils wishing to enter this form should be 11 years old by 31st April preceding the year of entry.  Please apply to the Registrar for an application form for Junior Entry.

Third Form
At 13+ those at Preparatory Schools will either sit the Common Entrance Examination set by an external body but marked at Glenalmond, or sit the Academic Scholarship examination which is set and marked by the College (see page 6).

For those coming from other types of school, our own assessment tests are set (basic tests in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning).  Additional requirements include a reference from current school.

Fourth Form
At 14+ entry is straight into the beginning of the two year GCSE course and pupils will be assessed by our basic tests (see above) and by recommendation from their current schools.

Fifth Form
GCSE Courses are two years long and entry directly into the Fifth Form (i.e. half-way through these courses) can pose problems with preparation for the GCSE examinations, but applications at this stage will always be considered on merit.

Sixth Form
For entry into the two year A Level Course, the minimum entry requirement is 5 GCSE grades at B or above, or equivalent Standard Grade/Intermediate 2 scores.  In certain subjects (e.g. Maths) an A grade at GCSE would normally be expected.

In addition, Sixth Form Entrance Tests in the subjects proposed for the Sixth Form are taken in November, or by arrangement with the Registrar later in the year, together with an interview.

Additional entry criteria for non-native English speakers
For those applying from overseas, or whose first language is not English, we expect, as a minimum, an Intermediate standard of written and spoken English in order for pupils to be able to undertake academic courses satisfactorily (IELTS Grade 4 or equivalent).  See also Guardianship Requirements for Overseas Pupils.

REGISTRATION & ENROLMENT

How do I enter my child for Glenalmond?

To enter a child for Glenalmond a simple Registration Form is completed and returned to the Admissions Office.  There is a small registration charge of £50 (non-refundable) which is paid at the point of registering your child.  This is not a guarantee of a place, as all places offered are subject to the pupil meeting the minimum reference and academic entry requirements.

Choosing a House

Some parents will come already aware of the House they would like to see.  Many will have no initial preference.  We would always try to accommodate parental wishes expressed at the time of making an appointment.  The nature of tours is such that it is not normally possible to see more than two Houses in any one visit.  Where parents have no particular preference, they will be shown a House where there is available space.

Shortly after a visit, parents will be asked to express a preference which will result in their son or daughter’s name being placed on the list for that House.  When that list reaches capacity, names will be added to another House list and also put on a provisional list for the first choice House.  Names will be moved up the list if spaces become available.

What happens then?

Once you have registered your child for the College, we will keep you informed at regular intervals of steps that need to be taken.  We will also send you news from the College to keep you up to date with all that is going on.
