These competition finals got underway on the cold crisp evening of the 7th November, just before the school barbecue and the magnificent fireworks display. Four schools were represented in the final readings and all were unanimous in their appreciation of the event itself. One happy observer noted:
"A big thank you for yesterday. Pupils and parents thoroughly enjoyed themselves and as ever the English Department put on a fantastic event."
Another opined:
"Very well done with this event. It is excellent to have an intellectual challenge such as this for Prep Schools and it is much appreciated by them."
Local poet, Kenneth Steven, graced this event with his elegance and poise when he gave his opinion on this year's winning piece. Again, the competition was well received by local schools with initially nearly two hundred entries on the theme of Guy Fawkes. Some writers chose to view the spectacle of Fawkes' execution from the position of a mouse or from the perspective of a servant or daughter. There were a few very good poetry entries and a wide range of different interpretations inspired by the "remember, remember" theme.
The quality of the writing was exceptional and those invited to the final were really of the highest order. The winning story was a model of maturity and sensitivity and the adults of the audience were literally stunned by its depth and skill. The next event is the Junior Schools' Debating Competition in January! Something to note for diaries…
