TEAM OPPONENTS RESULT SCORE REPORT
1st XV MERCHISTON Lost 10-21 Another nearly story against one of the big guns! Once again Glenalmond proved their ability to mix it with the big boys. With the odds against them the XV produced a stirring performance that rocked Merchiston for large parts of the game. The visitors started the game with a real sense of purpose and an intensity that put Coll on the back foot. Caught in the headlights a little, the XV found themselves 14-0 down with only ten minutes of the match gone and only an improving defence managed to prevent further scores from the cup semi finalists in the first period. As the half developed and Coll grew in confidence, the game began to become a more even affair and it would only be fair to say that Coll finished the half pressing Merchiston in a more composed period of play. The second half however was dominated by Coll. The territory and possession stats were all in our favour and only heroic Merchiston defending kept us at bay. Wave after wave battered the line and gradually Coll began to exert more and more pressure. A Fenton (R) penalty followed by a surging try from Straengh(S) took us in to a grandstand finish. With ten minutes remaining Glenalmond were pressing for the win. With the game moving to a close Merchiston broke out from defence and scored an excellent individual try to finish any lingering hopes of a famous win. The score line doesn't reflect what was an excellent contest and a fine performance from Coll.

I was very proud of the boys' performance today. To be able to compete and give Merchiston a fright is testament to a lot of hard work and a real determination from the boys. Had we squeezed over in the last five minutes or so I don't think anyone would have begrudged us the win. We still need to play for 70 mins at the top level but on the whole I am really pleased with the performance. We wish Merchiston the best of luck in the Cup Semi Final on Thursday and are very much looking forward to our trip North to face Gordonstoun.

2nd XV Merchiston Lost 07-10 Having clung on to a 7-0 lead for most of the match on a stamina-sapping swamp, we tired towards the end to lose the match with the final kick of the game.

3rd XV GEORGE WATSONS

U16 A XV Merchiston Won 17-5 Fantastic! An immense display from the team, in what were very difficult conditions. The boys dominated throughout and produced an impressive all round display. This was thoroughly deserved after an excellent weeks training and is a real boost for the team in what has been a difficult season so far.

U14 A XV MERCHISTON Won 18-12 A superb performance and an outstanding result; the U.14 A XV played to their full potential to achieve an historic 18-12 win away at Merchiston. This victory was richly deserved; the midfield defence impressed and put Merchiston under pressure on their own ball; the tackling was magnificent and the creative flair and variety shown in attack was a delight to see. The ultimate team performance and the best result from a Glenalmond U.14 team for several years. A magnificent and memorable day.

1st XV

FETTES

Won

24-20

The same shortcomings that haunted us against Strathallan surfaced and we were second best. Fettes played well today and deserved more from the game. The last fifteen minutes did however show how capable we can be. Huge relief to gain the win but much to do before we take on Merchiston next week.

2nd XV

FETTES

Lost

0-3

In a very close game where we had more of the pressure, we made crucial mistakes at key moments.  We made chances which we then failed to take, where Fettes capitalised on their only scoring opportunity.

3rd XV

FETTES

U16 A XV

FETTES

Lost

0-31

The score line does not reflect the team’s performance against a strong and physical Fettes side, who were pinned back in their half for large periods of the game. There was a noticeable improvement at the breakdown and the team did not take a backward step throughout, which was very encouraging.

U14 B XV

FETTES

Draw

0-0

With Glenalmond’s attacks being repeatedly repelled by Fettes’ defence, we broke through only once.  We were awarded a penalty in the second half but missed, leaving the final result as a 0-0 draw.

As yet unbeaten the 2nd XI played beautifully as a team and were led from the front by captains Charlotte who is steadfast in defense and Kirsty who worked very hard in midfield. Save of the term so far by Annabel who threw herself to the ground in successfully saving a shot. Great play by all - keep it up.

Rugby Saturday 17th September

Glenalmond College v Madras (H)

Win 47-3

On a wet afternoon at Coll, Glenalmond entertained a spirited Madras outfit, bolstered by some returning players who had missed the previous weekend. A physical and determined Madras side forced several early errors from the Coll side that were perhaps looking to over-complicate in the conditions. This led to an early period of pressure and a successful penalty attempt by Madras to leave Coll behind for the second week in succession. In a stop start, error filled first half, Coll certainly dominated the possession but failed to turn this advantage in to points. Two Fenton (R) penalties took Coll in to the lead before a forward-orientated try from Strachan (G) finally allowed Coll to relax a little. The second half was a far more controlled and clinical affair as Coll rattled in another six tries without reply. The forwards deserve much of the plaudits for an excellent foundation and moment of the match must go to Fenton for an outstanding try from 40 metres out.

Boys' Sports News for the weekend of September 17th

Amongst other matches played this weekend, the 2nd XV coasted to a comfortable 53-0 win against a Stewart's Melville XV, with Henry Ambler leading from the front as Captain and Jock Cameron directing the backs effectively. The Under 16 A XV, after the disappointment of last week, responded with a win in the Under 16 Plate against Madras. Some great team work was matched by individual brilliance, with the team managing to score five superb tries resulting in a score of 33-5. The Under 14 XV also won their match, 67-0, against Madras College after a week of rigorous training. They moved the ball about and played with confidence in a match which provided the opportunity for several squad members to play as replacements.

Boys 1st Hockey

The team played away this past week in the Under 18 Scottish Cup at the Aberdeen Sports Village and won the tournament on the difference of a single goal from Aberdeen GS after the two sides fought out a thrilling 3-3 draw and both beat Gordonians in their other game. Glenalmond beat Gordonians 3-1. This was an impressive performance as this is the first time many of the boys have picked up a stick since March and we were a couple of players down through injury.

With the return of some of our key players from the 1sts this year we met Loretto with a strong team. Having worked on some key skills that let us down last week the girls were well prepared for this match. In goal Holly worked well with the defence to make sure everyone kept their focus. Hannah-Jane Headon and Eilidh Richardson in particular played some outstanding hockey and gave a clear impression that they are always in control. In the mid field Cat Loudon worked tirelessly working up and back in order to secure the ball aided by Holly Craven who also played some tremendous hockey and managed to get us on the score sheet. A fantastic effort from all the girls, well done. Thank you to all the parents who came to support us.

This was our first outing as a team. Many of the team had never played in a proper match before and only held a hockey stick for the first time 9 days ago. The team played extremely well, giving it their all. They have all to be congratulated on their great team formations, with pupils with more experience helping the new girls and all working together. The defence was led by Susannah and Kayleigh and they did a fantastic job of keeping a solid back line which was difficult for the Loretto team to break through. The mids led by Jamaica ran up and down the pitch never losing their concentration, and constantly attacking and defending when necessary. The forwards were led by Emily, who also played extremely well and really put the pressure on the other team. Also playing well was Lottie who was not always near the ball, but played a beautifully tactical position, which broke their defences. This really was a great game to start the season and I am delighted with the enthusiasm and contributions of all the players.
