Glenalmond College Michaelmas 10 Field Day

Junior Entry

Junior Entry pupils spent the day admiring the various animals at Drummond Safari Park, especially the lions! Bison meerkats, deer, camels, dromedaries, lemurs, Humboldt penguins and pedalos all commanded their attention. The sit down lunch was also greatly appreciated!

Whereas groups of the 68-strong Third Form were despatched far and wide:

Climbing at the Edinburgh indoor climbing arena

Open Canoeing starting on the lower section of the River Lyon and joining the River Tay into Aberfeldy.

Hiking around Loch Faskally near Pitlochry and finally

Mountain biking high up on the hills above Aberfeldy

For 71 of the new 4th Form CCF recruits activities started after supper on Tuesday when they were escorted to the golf course and issued with equipment to build shelters. After about an hour their shelters were deemed adequate. Sections were then given a task to carry out with a route to follow whilst making as little noise as possible. All communication was to be by hand signal.

The next hour was incredibly quiet and even with the aid of flares we were unable to detect any groups' whereabouts until they returned at 22.30. Although it started to rain at about midnight, most cadets got some sleep and were only slightly damp when their NCO s woke them at 05.30.

All returned to Coll for a welcome shower followed by breakfast before joining the rest of the CCF for a full day of activities taking place around the campus. About 140 cadets in total were given the chance to improve their skills with sessions of foot-drill, field cookery, shooting on the outdoor range, tying knots, field observation, camouflage and concealment, archery, leadership tasks, survival in the field and a run over an obstacle course.

Activities drew to a close at 16.30 with rain still falling. Nonetheless cadets and officers remained in good spirits.

RN Section Field Day for Seniors

16 of the senior cadets went with Lt Mundill on a cruise down the Clyde. They boarded the MV Oronsay which is a Fleet Tender operating from Great Harbour in Greenock. They sailed it and navigated it from Greenock to Rothesay, on the Isle of Bute, and back!

This day gave them the chance to put into practice the theory that they have learnt in the classroom. It was also the first time that some of them had had a chance to take the helm on such a large vessel (25m length and 8m beam).  Judging from the photographs some of them found it difficult to keep a straight course!
