The William Bright Society is named after a former theological tutor at Glenalmond College and aims to develop the intellectual curiosity and expand the horizons of higher-achieving pupils.
William Bright, D.D. (1824-1901) was an English Church historian who was educated at University College, Oxford; ordained a priest in 1850; and for nine years was a theological tutor at what was then Trinity College, Glenalmond. He later became Canon of Christ Church and Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Oxford University.
The society bearing his name enjoys regular lectures, discussions (held in cross-year groups) and extended reading. Pupils join from the Third Form (S2 in Scotland) onwards, with membership (by invitation) remaining fluid in the light of the academic performance of all pupils in the College. Currently, there are 69 boys and girls involved.
