Careers advice is provided in the Third Form and Fourth Form through the tutor system. Pupils meet their tutors three times a week and from time to time these sessions are used to take the first steps in investigating career choice.
In the Michaelmas Term Fifth Form pupils undertake a set of psychometric tests to help compile a career profile and to initiate ideas about Sixth Form subject choices. Pupils who join in the Lower Sixth are also encouraged to take part in this. Results and interview notes are forwarded to parents before Lent half-term to allow for consultation between pupils, staff and parents at the Fifth Form meeting.
Lower Sixth pupils have a presentation in the Lent Term as an introduction to the UCAS university application process. In the Trinity Term, following exams, further work is done on institution and course choice and the preparation of their Personal Statement which constitutes part of their application. UCAS forms are completed in the Michaelmas Term of the Upper Sixth or alternatively can be done under the supervision of Housestaff in the term following the summer in which a pupil has left Glenalmond. Glenalmond is a member of I.S.C.O. (the Independent Schools Careers Organisation) which is invaluable in providing support and information concerning a wide range of careers to augment the in-house service. Members can continue to use their services up to the age of 25.
