Every pupil in the 2nd, 4th and 5th Form has a single lesson of Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education per week with a dedicated PSHCE teacher. 3rd Form pupils have a double lesson per week which incorporates Drama. Our new course was very well received by the Care and Welfare Inspectors as demonstrated by the following quote from the report:
"The college has developed and introduced in the current session a progressive, whole-school programme for personal, social, health and citizenship education. The programme offers pupils a well-balanced range of modules covering such areas as healthy living, well-being, anti-bullying, alcohol and drug misuse and race equality. Sixth form pupils had a specific programme developed to meet their needs of transition from school to their future studies and careers. Teachers used the programme well and flexibly to address current issues within the school." (Inspection of care and welfare residential provision report - June 2005)
John Owen - Sub Warden, Chemistry teacher, Patchell's Tutor
Charles Youlten - Housemaster of Skrine's, Head of Drama
The planned programme for the academic year is reproduced below along with a summary of the resources we used within the PSHCE teaching programme. One of the key strengths the inspectors identified is our ability to react swiftly to situations and to modify the content of the programme from week to week, so please be warned - things will probably change as the year progresses!
During the school year we will be trialling some of the SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) Resources with our 2nd years. A topic will be introduced through P.S.H.C.E. and the theme will be pick up by other departments throughout the week.
In addition to the weekly programme detailed below outside speakers are brought in to Coll to talk to whole year groups or to work with smaller groups on specific issues.
Visiting Speakers include:
Drugs with Jonnie Leach: Jonnie is a trained psychotherapist and recovered drug addict. He talks with authority and humour basing his talk on his own experiences and training.
'A Day with Alex' Alex Corkran talking to groups and individuals about eating disorders. Alex is a regular visitor to Glenalmond; she is a thought-provoking and down to earth speaker and the pupils have always been very positive about her visits.
Sexual Health with doctor and nurse from Drumhar Health Centre (Family Planning). These sessions are run for 3rd, 4th and U6th Years.
Self Harm with Diana Sharp of the McLellan Practice in Harley Street.
Drugs with Tayside Police: this session is for the 4th Year.
