Studying the History of Art at A level will not instantly answer these questions, but it will enable pupils to discuss difficult cultural issues lucidly, coherently and with authority: precisely the qualities demanded by university courses in all the humanities. Our approach encourages these skills by emphasising the value of group discussions and the pupils' own reading and thought.

At AS the specification will build a strong foundation knowledge of history of art. Students will study formal analysis and interpretation of works of art and architecture, as well as the following themes:
This unit develops knowledge and understanding of formal characteristics, terminology and a general knowledge of historical, social and cultural contexts for painting, sculpture and architecture.
Candidates develop an understanding of art historical themes in relation to examples of works of western art and architecture, artists and architects drawn from Classical Greece to the end of the twentieth century. Study of particular themes, such as patronage, form and style, historical and social contexts, and material, techniques and processes are made.
At A2 pupils will study Investigation and Interpretation of art and architecture in the following units:
