The Amnesty International Group meets weekly to write letters on behalf of political prisoners in many countries. As Peter Benenson, the founder of Amnesty International, showed four decades ago, this is an effective way of promoting human rights, as authorities take notice when hundreds of letters land on their doormats. At our weekly meetings we also read and discuss Amnesty briefings on human rights abuses in many countries. Recent campaigns have focussed on killings of street children in Brazil, violence against women, and torture in a number of countries.
