The Munro Club gives pupils the chance to get away from it all, and lift their eyes unto the hills. It generally meets 3 times a term on Sundays. The mountain and route are chosen to suit the group and the weather forecast. This might be Cairngorm with ice axes and crampons in winter, scrambling on the Aonach Eagach above Glencoe in summer or simply striding over the heather of Beinn Ime in Arrochar. Pupils are unlikely to climb the same mountain twice in their time at Coll! For those who are not sure if it is for them, our equipment store can lend most items for outings. Pupils can sign up for any individual outing, with no further commitment.
Mr Bill Bain (billbain@glenalmondcollege.co.uk)
The Munro Club has again been active, with several stalwarts adding to their tally – though with so many other attractions at weekends, the number for whom intense physical effort appeals has been variable. Ascents have included Meall Garbh and Meall Greigh, Ben Chonzie, Ben Vorlich, Glas Maol and Carn of Claise, Schiehallion, A' Mharconaich and Geall Charn, Stob a Choire Odhair and Beinn Chabhair. Even pronouncing them all correctly is exercise!
Probably the highlight was our short early winter day on Glas Maol, where the unexpected fresh soft powder snow had a crust on it which let lightweights across, but plunged our heavier brethren up to their knees. As we arrived at the top in glorious sunshine, a helicopter came down alongside, to rescue a microlight which had crashed on the top a little earlier.
Thanks are due to Robert Page in his role as senior member, aiding and encouraging. Having been on almost every outing since he started Junior Entry, I believe he has notched up 50 Munros with us.
