There are two Pipe Bands, both of which compete in school competitions. The ‘A’ band wears full ceremonial dress whilst the ‘B’ band wears day dress. The bands perform at various venues throughout the UK as well as going on tour. Recent events include playing at Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Highland Show and playing in Perth for HRH Princess Royal.
The bands have also appeared live on national TV in the US during a network breakfast TV show. Further afield, the band has played at the Festival Interceltique in Lorient, Brittany as well as at the Range of Lakes Festival in Lithuania. Practise is under the directorship of Brian Elrick who teaches piping at the school and Gordon Brown who teaches drumming.

Friday 15th January.
Fettes hosted the annual Scottish Schools Piobaireachd competition. This is a solo piping competition where each school is allowed to enter 1 piper in each section, playing Piobaireachd, the classical music for the great highland bagpipe.
Fergus Davidson and Cameron Montgomery represented Coll in the senior and junior sections both gaining 3rd place in their respective sections.
Glenalmond was the only school to have pipers featured on each list.
Well done to both!
CCF quartet and trio competition Michaelmas 09
On Friday 13th November 2009 our 'A' quartet of Pipe Major Fergus Davidson, Vanessa Rettie, George Smith and Cameron Montgomery were placed 3rd out of 13 at the CCF quartet and trio competition held at Strathallan.
The quartet competition is the senior event on the night and sees probably the highest standard of group playing at any CCF event of the year so huge congratulations to our quartet in placing ahead of every school bar one (Dollar Academy winning both 1st and 2nd prizes).
The pipers have been kept busy with two big solo competitions. Friday 16th saw Cameron Montgomery coming away with 3rd place in the Novice section at the CCF Piobaireachd competition held at The Edinburgh Academy whilst the next day Hamish Dunbar Nasmith placed 4th and Hamish Prestige 6th in the Novice march at the Vale of Atholl competition at Pitlochry High School. Not to be outdone, Cameron was in the prize list again with a 5th place in the Piobaireachd and a 4th place in the Under-15 March section. The standard at the CCF and Vale competitions is very high and the main winners would certainly feature at national level so well done to all concerned.
The pipes and drums were out in strength performing just prior to the Prep Schools Choral Day service at the weekend. A total of 35 pipers and drummers from both the 'A' and 'B' bands were led by Pipe Major Craig Wainwright-Fisher in his first engagement since being appointed Pipe Major. All year groups from Third Form through to Upper Sixth were represented with a sizeable contingent of Third Form pipers out on parade. Some were already playing their second engagement of the term, having already performed at Scone Palace for the Order of St John earlier in the term.
