Opera Club Trips

In the last week of November we took an enthusiastic group to see Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore performed by Scottish Opera at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh. It proved to be a really charming production, which we all greatly enjoyed.

The next trip will be to La Bohème next term.

On 21st October we saw Scottish Opera's new production of The Italian Girl in Algiers at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow. In spite of a few initial misgivings about the modern treatment – on the set of a "low-budget Latino soap opera about the life and loves of the Mediterranean super-rich" – it proved to be a wonderfully entertaining and absorbing evening. We all enjoyed it enormously.

Our next trip will be to L'elisir d'amore in a few weeks time.

The House of Bernarda Alba

On 8th October a group of Sixth Formers saw an adaptation of Federico García Lorca's classic play at Dundee Rep. This "drama of women in the villages of Spain" had been transferred to the seamier side of Glasgow, which was somewhat unfortunate, as Lorca's work is never sordid, but the bones of the plot were there and the performance was gripping.

This trip followed two joint Modern Language Department/ International Club outings in September, one to Pedro Almodóvar's acclaimed new film, Broken Embraces and the other to a Uruguayan movie, El baño del Papa.
