Basketball is taught to pupils during PE lessons and is a sports option two days a week in both the Michaelmas and Lent terms. Juniors taking the option are coached in both personal and team skills and encouraged to develop their game by joining the older players until they reach a team selection standard. Senior basketball focuses more on team strategies. We play other independent and state schools, as well as taking part in the Scottish Schools Cup. The majority of fixtures are played during the Lent Term when Glenalmond operates an U18 team and a development structure for U15 players.

Last year's winners retained the annual house basketball cup, fighting off the challenge from Matheson's who were close after the first half, but ran into serious foul trouble in the second, losing both of their school team players. This fatally weakened their attack and Reid's ran out comfortable winners 22-11.
My thanks to all the players for a spirited afternoon's matches
v Fettes March 18th 2010
Glenalmond 30 Fettes 53
Once again the match was characterised by poor defense on our part, coupled with a seeming inability of some of the team to play AS a team and follow coaching instructions.
A fourth quarter played without our scoring once leaves me as frustrated as I was at the beginning of the season. I hope that next year some of the very keen up-and-comers will be more rewarding to coach.
v Merchiston March 4th 2010
A match which was level for the first three quarters was thrown away by some reckless individualism in the fourth quarter, with a resulting low percentage of shots scored from the floor. Six points only scored in ten minutes of play tells the story.
Score: Glenalmond 46, Merchiston 54
v Gordonstoun, 2nd February 2010
Glenalmond 53, Gordonstoun 50
A game full of endeavour. And basic defensive mistakes from both teams, although Gordonstoun featured rather more in this characterisation than the home team. As a result they ran into foul trouble fairly early on, with four fouling out.
Quarter by quarter as follows:
Q1: Coll 18, Stoun 12
Q2: Coll 24, Stoun 25
Q3: Coll 40, Stoun 37
Q4: Coll 53, Stoun 50.
With free throws featuring more prominently than usual, it was good to see Coll sinking almost all of theirs, underlining that close games can be decided from the "charity stripe".
An improvement for Coll, with good displays from the captain, Bland, and Tsang. Newcomer Derkachevskiy played confidently, although attracting Technical fouls for arguing with the referee!
Individual scores
Leo Li - 17 pts: Jake Tsang - 13 pts: Jack Wang - 11 pts
Seb Bland - 8 pts: Derkachevskiy - 4 pts.
v Merchiston Castle 3-11-09
Glenalmond 21, Merchiston 58
Merchiston fielded two very tall and capable players who controlled the boards at both ends. We had another poor defensive display, not pressuring the Merchiston shooting guards or power forwards. With our shots not going in as well as loose defense, it added up to a deserved victory for the Merchiston team
v Strathallan 17-10-09
Glenalmond 34, Strathallan 92
Strath have three National League-capable players who murdered us together with the remainder of their team playing well together. We played as hard as we could, but shots would not go in and the height of their best players kept us off the boards at both ends.
They have produced a team which should have a very good Schools Cup run.
Scottish Schools Cup Competition 1st round
September 30th 2009
v Bell Baxter HS (Cupar) (H)
Glenalmond College 44 Bell Baxter High School 41
Period 1: Coll 15 Bell Baxter 9
Period 2: Coll 29 Bell Baxter 15
Period 3: Coll 33 Bell Baxter 25
Period 4: Coll 44 Bell Baxter 41
Coll fielded an almost completely new team for this 1st round Cup game in the Gannochy Hall against Bell Baxter playing in this competition for the first time.
With only six players, Coll rotated their bench under the captain Seb Bland, who played an excellent game as point guard. Coll were never behind in this fast-paced match but Bell Baxter were closing towards the end, with three of the Coll players in foul trouble and Bland on the bench for a while in the third quarter. He controlled the closing three minutes well, running down the clock to deny Bell Baxter more offensive time. The visitors had an opportunity to level the game when Coll suffered a technical foul at the death, but Bell Baxter failed to convert the free shots and it was game over. A good team performance although remarkably and, from memory, a new school record was established by Jake Tsang (M) who scored exactly forty of Coll's forty four points!
