Glenalmond is fortunate to own a course designed by former Open Champion, James Braid. It is a 9 hole course with 2 different tees on each hole, allowing 18 holes to be played. Golf is primarily a summer term activity and players should preferably have their own clubs, but clubs and balls can be supplied to beginners. Games sessions involve either coaching for beginners or regular stroke competitions with a season-eclectic competition (where the best score at each hole throughout the season is recorded). The College is represented on alternate years in the Scottish Wayfarers Golf Match which plays an R & A team on the Old Course at St Andrews, one of the highlights of the year. We play matches against local schools in the Perth & Kinross Schools Golf League, as well as an annual fixture against Old Glenalmond Golf Society. Glenalmond hosts the Scottish Independent Schools Golf Competition each year in June. The course is occasionally closed for matches, but otherwise pupils are free to play in their spare time and at weekends.

The 2009-2010 Season Roundup
|
The Captain of Golf this year is Peter Gordon, who is following in his father's footsteps in being Captain for two years in a row.
An extremely wet summer and early autumn meant that we had to cancel the Junior Golf Day, which was very disappointing for both us and the participating schools.
The Old Glenalmond Golf Society were excellent hosts at Elie for our autumn treat. This is a great opportunity for the current crop of Coll players to meet up with the OGs and to build associations which will last for many years.
The O.G.G.S. provided funding to offer professional coaching to all Coll youngsters. Fifty pupils signed up but not all were able to take advantage because of other commitments. Billy Marchbanks was very popular with the pupils and he was very impressed by all who attended. Funding was also made available for coaching for the Elite players by Gregor Monks who came up to Coll on 2 afternoons in the Trinity term.
Skrines won the Senior House which again had to be reduced to 9 holes off the back tees due to the pressures of exams and other commitments. The best score was returned by Fergus Sandison. Skrines also won the Tollygunge Tankard, the Junior House Trophy, with Tom Simmonds having the best individual score of the day.
The O.G. match was won by the OG team by 9-6. Our strong pool of players was drastically cut by professional commitments, County golf, Spanish Regional Golf and examination worries. Those, who gallantly stepped up to the plate acquitted themselves well.
The Scottish Independent Schools Golf competition was held in early June with the course in very impressive condition. Loretto, again the pre-competition favourites were also in impressive form and returned an aggregate 3 player total of 219. Glenalmond were runners-up with a total of 230, which would have won the event in any other year. The leading gross score was 70 by Peter Templeton of Loretto. Tom Simmonds had the best nett score of the day.
In the Perth and Kinross Schools Golf competitions we won all the matches that we played against Strathallan, Morrisons, Auchterarder and Kinross and came 3rd in the Stocks Cup. Sadly the competition seems to be in its last throes with the retiral of the Association officials after many years at the helm and the failure of a new generation to take up the torch.
The James Braid competition was held in June for under 13s from local Golf Clubs. Only 3 clubs participated this year and the winners were again Strathmore Golf Club, who pipped Auchterarder Golf Club by 1 shot.
I am very grateful to Craig Henderson for his help in running golf this year.
June
Glenalmond Junior Golf Team Competition
Ths annual midsummer team competition for under thirteens between local Golf Clubs was played on the James Braid-designed golf course at the Cairnies, Glenalmond College. Each club is represented by a team of four players and the team total is the sum of the scores of their 3 best players over 9 holes.
This year the teams from Strathmore Golf Club and Auchterarder Golf Club tied in first place with totals of 142. The tie was resolved when the score of the 4th player of both teams was examined, Strathmore Golf Club narrowly defeated Auchterarder Golf Club by 1 stroke.
An exciting finish to a very well contested competition. The best individual score of the night (41) was returned by Brad Bannerman of Strathmore Golf Club.
Monday 3rd May
The Glenalmond Team of Peter Gordon, Fergus Sandison, Richard McPhail and Thomas Simmonds, did very well in the Perth and Kinross Schools' Stocks Cup, which was held at Auchterarder Golf Club, coming third behind teams from Blairgowrie High School and Kinross High School.
Peter was third in the individual competition with a gross score of 72 and narrowly missed out in selection for the Perth & Kinross Schools team for the Scottish Championships at Murrayshall in Perth. while Thomas came second in the handicap section with a nett score of 65 where the CSS was 69. The best score of the day was a 64 from Paul McPhee, a Scottish Internationalist, from Perth Academy.
Tuesday 4th May
The Glenalmond Team of Fergus Sandison, Richard McPhail, Andreas Frey and Salvador Fuster beat Strathallan School at Auchterarder Golf Club in our annual match in the Perth & Kinross Schools League by a score of 3-1.Fergus won 2 holes up, Richard won 5 up, Andreas won 7 up while Salvador lost 2 down..A good start to our league fixtures. Well done.
Thursday 6th May
Peter Gordon and Fergus Sandison played for the Glenalmond team against the experienced OGGS pairing of Sandy Gray and David Rennie at Bruntsfield in the Wayfarers vs Wayfarers schools match. They were blessed with good weather and had an excellent game. For the result of the tie and overall match, please see attached results.
