Boys' Hockey is played at Glenalmond during the Lent Term. All boys in the Third Form are required to participate in two afternoons of hockey with those selected for the Junior Colts receiving an additional coaching session. Block fixtures involving eight College teams are played against Fettes, Loretto and Strathallan with many extra fixtures being organised, particularly for the senior XI's. The 1st XI play in both the Scottish Clubs and Schools' Cup Competitions and travel to the Festival at King Edward's School, Bath where they play many of the top schools in the UK.

A significant number of boys attend trials for the Midlands region at U16 and U18 level and at the opposite end of the spectrum the inter-house competition provides opportunities for players of all abilities.

Bath Festival Hockey

Having beaten Fettes 3-1 on the Thursday afternoon, the 1st XI headed south for the Bath Festival. On the Friday evening, a superb performance against the North of England U18 Champions, Caldey Grange, produced a fine 2-1 victory. In the two Saturday games, a disappointing draw against Sharnbrook Upper School from Bedford was followed by a dominant performance against Ryde School (Isle of Wight). The 7-0 margin left Coll in good spirits before the final game on Sunday morning vs Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School (HABS). Despite dominating the game, the score was tied at 2-2 until the last few minutes. However, late pressure told, for Coll to snatch victory with a late goal.

5 games in 4 days – 4 wins and 1 draw. Unbeaten in regular playing time (losing only 1 game on sudden death penalty flicks), this has been a great season for the 1st XI despite being hampered by minimal access to the all weather pitches. There has been a great improvement in individual performances and team play with coach, Allan Law, having a profound impact.

Best of luck to Ross Davies and Simon Carmichael in their games for Scotland U16 against Wales in Wrexham over the Easter weekend.

Finally the snow has allowed a pitch to emerge in time for a late season flourish. Early on, and without any practice, the A team contrived to snatch defeat from the jaws of a 2-0 lead against Fettes. Meanwhile the B team nobly defended a 0-0 score line to the bitter end. As a thaw began a combined junior side comfortably beat Stewart's Melville by 4-1, with the third form players performing really well. Several senior players were away on more serious battlefields in Belgium.

Then a journey to Strathallan provided a roller-coaster match: 2-0 down in five minutes, rescued to 3-2 up and then again allowing a lead to slip away. Final score in this one 3-3, and in the B team a narrow win by 1-0.

After the final spade work we were at last able to entertain Loretto, and a full strength team rattled in five and indeed missed two penalties. Fourteen goals for in four games, with 8 against, is definitely entertaining. The B team added a 4-1 win, and remain unbeaten. Of their five goals, Tom Simmonds has scored four, including a hat-trick.

To follow are matches on Saturday against Fettes, with the A team in Edinburgh. As a grand finale, the boys are challenged on Monday evening by the teachers, who will need the very valuable help of Ardvreck teachers to give them a chance.
