Girls' Hockey is played at Glenalmond during the Michaelmas Term. All Junior girls have three hockey sessions a week as do those Seniors who choose hockey as their main sport of the term. We regularly have between 7 and 9 teams playing on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Glenalmond College also participates in the Scottish Schools U18 Cup as well as both Junior and Senior Midlands District tournaments. Girls have the opportunity to trial at U15, U16 and U18 levels for Midlands District and the Scotland squads when invited. An inter-house tournament at Junior and Senior level is also an integral part of the Michaelmas term.

| After a disappointing 0-1 loss against QVS's 1st XI on Tuesday the girls were ready for a win. The season has left us in confusion after several matches in which the ball simply will not go in the back of the net and therefore losses should be wins!! Saturday's match is hopefully the end of that streak though as the girls played out of their socks to win 8-0. As coach it has been what I can only describe as a frustrating season so far as I have watched the girls improve more and more each week and games that they deserve to win they are narrowly lost. Hopefully Saturday's match has turned this misfortune around as they are a highly talented bunch and I thoroughly enjoy working with them. Well done team! | |||||||

| This is our first victory of the season and it was thoroughly well deserved. The girls have finally put all their hard work in practise time into their match play and it was a joy to watch. For the first time this season Annabel had a well reasonably quiet game in goal as the rest of the team played extremely well on the field. Best goal was scored by Annabel Flowers and player of the match was Flora Robertson. | |||||||

A disappointing score in what was a promising game. This was the first game since the second week of the season that has seen the full 1st XI fit and back playing together. The first half should have been ours, with some text book play particularly between the midfield and forwards but our inability to convert any of our many opportunities in the D meant all was even at half-time. An early goal caught us off-guard in the first five minutes of play in the second half and we struggled to settle down and focus on keeping possession and working the ball up the pitch after that.

| Although this game resulted in a loss, the score does not depict the game. Glenalmond were in Strath's 25 for most of the first half but through some missed opportunities and good defending we couldn't produce a goal. After half time Strathallan picked up our game and took full advantage of a dip in our concentration, getting a penalty flick and another goal. The girls game back fighting scoring an excellent goal but time was not on our side and the game ended 2-1. I was really pleased with the team's performance in this game and with a little work the ball will start going in the back of the net! | ||||||||

| An excellent team performance with the whole squad playing their part when on the field. We created many chances and should have converted more but our defence gifted the opposition a goal when they stopped having heard a whistle from the other pitch. We had about 7 minutes to go when we scored the third goal which gave us a bit of a cushion | ||||||||

Well done to those who were involved in this game. In the first half we completely dominated play. We worked the ball around the Strathallan mid field, Jemima and Amber fought tirelessly and used their skills to beat players and feed the ball up to the forwards. Our forwards Anzie and Isobel had some terrific shots on goal but hats off to the Strathallan keeper who was very quick. The second half saw us play with the same intensity though we lacked structure. Notable performances came from Isobel Houston and Sarah Peacock. The improvement that this team has made has been phenomenal and although this wasn't the score that we had hoped for or deserved I am delighted with all involved.

Though the score didn't reflect it, Saturday's match against Strathallan was one of the most successful games the U14Bs have played so far. Strathallan was a strong opponent but the girls stepped it up and the game was very evenly matched until the last few minutes when Strath were able to sneak in two goals. It was a very strong defensive line led by captain Phoebe Williams that kept Strath from scoring any more goals. Other key players included Annie Winton in defense and Charlotte Mackintosh, both of who played on every inch of the pitch. Our player of the match, however, was Rowan Gaskill. Our third goalkeeper of the season, Rowan bravely stepped into goal at the last minute and made some fantastic saves. The girls are continuing to improve and with every game play better and better. Well done!

Past experience has always shown how well we rise to the challenge of the stronger opposition and in the first half there was evidence to support this. Play was even throughout and the quality of passing and support was exceptional. At half-time we were 0-1 down but it could have easily been the other way, had we managed to make the most of play around the D and convert a couple of chances. The second half was another story; levels of concentration dropped and the focus was lacking. All credit must go to George Watson's who stepped up a gear and we were unresponsive to that. In addition to this we failed to close down players sufficiently quick enough and allowed them to play the ball around us. A disappointing end result after what was an excellent first half. | Saturday's match was disappointing and unfortunately goal opportunities were missed. The team came out fighting and spent a large chunk of the first half in Watson's 25. A break down in our press and unnecessary panic did lead to Watson's getting their first goal. The girls went out positively into the 2nd half but Watson's stepped up their came and with this scored a further two goals leaving an end result of a 3-0 Loss. We can still take positives from this game though; certain aspects of training were transferred to the game situation successfully. Watsons are a big school with an abundance of talent on the sports field so I was pleased that the girls fought a hard fight and never gave up until the final whistle!

| We were 2-0 down at half time but were playing well and creating chances which we didn't take. We were back to 2-1 early in the 2nd half and 2-2 with 10 minutes. We hit the post with the last play of the match but the ball went out for a 16 yard hit as the final whistle went. | |||||||

Fourth XI struggled from very early on because of a recurring injury to Stella. At half time 3-0 down, but a very brave rally to score and share the second half. Therefore final score 4-1. Jenny Anderton heroic in goal, having been drafted in on the day, and the defence held out really well, marshalled by Sophie Miller and Kirsty-Anne Macleod. It is scarcely fair to pick out major contributors when everyone played their heart out, but my pick of player of the day was Molly Brocklehurst.

Fifth X1 had never played together as a unit, and they were immediately aware that the opposition had practiced together frequently, and always on grass. They hit the ball crisply and accurately, and we did not. The result therefore was 5-0. George Watsons girls were very generous and gracious in victory, and we surrendered after a brave and noble struggle. Player of the day: Emma Mackintosh.

| Saturday's score did not reflect our improvement or our effort. Mary had some terrific saves in goal and our defence led by Sarah Peacock cleared the ball tirelessly as they were under a strong attack a lot of the time. The mid field and Amber Flowerdew in particular worked like Trojans up and back in order to keep the ball moving in the direction we desired. Our Forwards had to work hard to see any of the ball and were quickly stopped in their tracks by a strong Watsons defence. Watsons certainly had a few quick players but we stepped up the pace and managed to get one goal past their keeper. | |||||||

| Saturday saw an unfortunate loss for the U14Bs. George Watsons proved to be too strong for our girls as they defeated us 9-0. Due to an ankle injury our regular goalie, Clodagh McHardy, was out of commission but Lydia McCallum stepped in at the last minute. Despite never having played before she made some excellent saves and we were all very grateful! Defense made some excellent plays in the back and there were some good runs up the midfield into Watsons defensive zone but unfortunately we were unable to finish with a goal. The girls held up and worked very hard the whole match. I think they can take away some excellent lessons from this match and hopefully our next match will be more successful! As defending champions the pressure and expectations were high but nothing that was beyond our capabilities. A minor lapse in concentration and performance earlier on in the week was soon forgotten as we dealt with the task in hand. With twenty minute games one way, the format of a tournament puts a team under enormous pressure; failure to score in that short space of time can make the difference between winner of your section and third place play-off (and not a semi-finalist). The team was lively from the outset and an early goal from our captain Emily Hunter inspired the team to push themselves even harder. A second goal from our top scorer of the day, Alice Onslow (with four goals), secured our first convincing victory. In the following two games, against Loretto and St.Leonard's the team displayed a cohesiveness that was evident at the start of the season but had since been a little lacking. The team came out winners of their section and came up against Strathallan in the semi-final. The friendly rivalry that comes with this is what motivates us and the team is often able to increase their level of output and focus in these all important matches. At two goals up and with 8 minutes to go, things looked fairly safe but a determined Strathallan side were never about to give in easily and a goal from them put the pressure back on us. Defensively we were (whilst down on numerous players) at our best this season but a sense of relief came with the final whistle. This had been the same way through to the final as last year and against the same opposition in both rounds. With only Dollar between us and the trophy the focus was still evident and payback time for Tuesday's disastrous game was on the cards. Some excellent linking play between our midfield and forwards gave Rose Eden the opportunity to put us ahead first and that is how it remained for a while. Unfortunately it was soon to change as a goal from Dollar put us into extra time and after no score, flicks loomed ahead of us. Lack of practice on these was our downfall and although our goal keeper Lydia Proctor did an outstanding job, we were unable to convert enough. Dollar were, deservedly, the eventual winners but nothing can be taken away from the fine performance that the squad displayed.

| With the coach journey down to Edinburgh and a delayed start to the match it took Glenalmond a while to find their feet. 10 minutes into the match those feet were found and the girls were producing some good hockey with some goal chances. Their newly formed 'high press' worked well and meant we were in their half for a long spell, unfortunately it just wasn't our day and the ball would not go in the net. A hard fought battle resulted in a 0-0 draw with missed scoring opportunities. Remember girls....every task you undertake, becomes a piece of cake AKA we'll get there! | |||||||

| What a transformation - again due to the flu we had a depleted team - but what a performance. Although we went a goal down after 30 seconds the girls were determined and passed the ball to each other with skill - Annie who has only played 5 weeks of hockey scored our first goal of the season. At half time we were 2-1 down and shortly into the second half 3-1 down but the girls had their tails up and scored two very well worked goals to equalise - given 5 more minutes who knows what would have happened. Great captaincy by Anna and great play by Annabel in goal again and Morag Fiona and Annie - but congrats to all for a great team effort. Many thanks also to our loyal supporters who were very encouraging. | |||||||

| Following a crushing loss against Kilgraston on Tuesday, the U14Bs rallied to win 2-0 against Loretto on a windy but sunny Saturday afternoon. Captained by Phoebe Williams, Glenalmond maintained control of the ball for the majority of the game but it wasn't until the second half that we saw the ball in the back of the goal. The first half saw Loretto attacking hard into our 25 but with some excellent saves by our goalie, Clodagh, they were unable to score. Our midfielders, particularly Rowan Gaskell and Phoebe Anderson, made some great runs up the field and had some great scoring opportunities. Loretto, however, were also in possession of a very strong goalie so we were unable to score this half. Following an excellent pep talk at half time by some of our fans, the girls took the field raring to go. This time, we pushed the ball hard into their defense, with Olivia Gillespie scoring first, followed by a second goal scored by Daisy Walker. All in all it was a great team effort, with everyone working hard to make this happen. Great job girls!!! | |||||||

| Thursday's match saw the turning on of the 'hockey light bulb' in the 2nds game. Every aspect of training was put into play as the girls produced some really lovely and highly skilful hockey. A quick goal was scored minutes into the first half, setting the tone for the rest of the match. Even when under pressure the defensive line up was the epitome of calmness, clearing the ball to midfield every time. The girls really played as a team in this match, with effective communication leading to 6 more goals being scored (Charlotte Marlow - 3rd time lucky!!) and a very happy coach on the sidelines - fantastic girls well done! | |||||||

| We unfortunately lost this fixture 1-0 but the girls can be very proud of a thoroughly good performance by the entire team - definitely the best so far this season. | After last Saturdays disappointing score we certainly bounced back against Kilgraston. The team played with a new found confidence. The mid field worked consistently well, feeding the ball to the forwards who moved well around the circle in order to find the gaps. This has been a vast improvement in a short time. | |||||||

Scorer: Sophie Stahr The atmosphere was exhilarating last Saturday. With a near complete squad available to play, the level of energy displayed on the pitch remained constantly impressive throughout and was to be the frustration of a strong George Heriot's side. They were the more skilful side but our consistently stubborn defensive play allowed little through into the circle. In addition to this, a truly impressive performance by Lydia Proctor in goal kept us in the game on numerous occasions; an indication of the significance and importance of a promising goal-keeper. Once settled, the first half saw controlled passing with the emphasis on keeping possession the game was beginning to open up. By half-time we were 0-1 down. A goal early on in the second half from Sophie Stahr gave us an extra burst of energy and the last ten minutes of play saw our most promising phases of play to date this season. A fine performance and a well deserved draw. Player of the Match: Lydia Proctor

| Against a well rehearsed and talented George Heriot's side, the girls came out fighting. It took Glenalmond the first 10 minutes to settle into the game but one this happened the girls relaxed and produced some nice hockey. Heriots had many chances at goal in the both halves but due to excellent defending and a textbook performance from Heather Campbell in goal we managed to hang on to a 0-0 draw. | |||||||

| The 3rd XI played well in the first half with the ball being moved rapidly from end to end by both teams. We were unlucky to concede a goal before halftime. In the second half, as in the first we had chances which we were unable to take but we started to find it more difficult to hit the ball hard enough and kept finding the opposition with attempted clearances and passes. Herriot's were then able to apply pressure and were able to score three more goals without reply | |||||||

| The 4th XI were out in force for their very first meeting of the new term. They faced their opponents with determination and team spirit. Our Captain Stella Stewart led the team in a thundering and earth shattering chant of OGGY! OGGY! OGGY! to strike fear into the hearts of George Heriot opponents. Sadly however, despite our very best efforts we were left wondering where it all went wrong as they fired two goals past our keeper in the first half and a further three in the second half. Our team battled to the end with some very impressive attacks by our forwards Hennie Dracup, Annabel Blackett and Stella Stewart. Our Vice-Captain Lisa Robertson fought bravely as did our defence particularly Natalie Watson and Tara Irons Young without whom we would have suffered a more crushing defeat. A few more practice sessions will help iron out those areas of weakness that were identified in this game and we will be back for our next game with the same team spirit but renewed determination and self confidence. Well done to all girls who played. | |||||||

| Unfortunately it was obvious that we have still a lot to do. We have to work on playing as a team if we want to catch up with teams such as Heriots who have been playing together for at least a year. The first half saw us struggle to get the ball out of our half and cleared effectively. However the second half was much better and we managed to concede only one goal which was an improvement. | |||||||

| The U14Bs played very well against their opponents from George Heriots. Heriots were a very strong opponent and really forced the girls to work their hardest to win the ball. The ball did spend a lot of time in our defense but the girls proved they could handle the pressure, stopping at least 8 short corners throughout the game. It wasn't until the last few minutes that Heriots was able to just tip the ball into the goal to give a final score of 1-0 to them. Clodagh McHardy, in her debut as our goalie, proved to be an asset with her strong voice and fast feet in goal. Phoebe Williams and Fenella Thornton-Kemsley were our players of the match; Fenella as a mid fielder was all over the field providing strong support everywhere, while Phoebe was a wall on defense, stopping everything and clearing the ball out as needed. Once we get our attacking skills and fitness levels up these girls will be a force to be reckoned with Well done! | |||||||
