Netball is a growing sport at Glenalmond College and is played in the Lent term alongside the busy lacrosse schedule. We have regular fixtures against local prep and senior schools as well as participating in the Scottish Independent Schools Tournament in March. Some of our girls have been selected for the Perth and Kinross District Squads, putting them on the path to national representative honours.

First Fixture of Lent 2010 - a "Report"

Netball 1st XV v Glenalmond Gladiators
Thursday 14th January 2010

After a difficult start to the term the girls finally took to the boards for their first game of the season against the much vaunted Gladiator side selected from the staff common room. In this eagerly anticipated match up the Gladiator side immediately hit their stride with a purposeful start. Straight from kick off the physical presence and slick teamwork of the Gladiators put 'Coll' on the back foot. With KAW and Fr Giles up front the staff possessed a formidable attacking strike force. 'Coll' worked hard to try and contain the imposing opposition midfield but were frequently under siege from Messrs Thomas, Bruce and Mrs Pounder.

On the stroke of the first time out 'Coll' managed to secure good Line Out possession and worked the ball in to the end zone for Captain Henderson to score a 3–pointer from 'down town', just about keeping 'Coll' in the game! Tactical naïvety from the Gladiators allowed Coll to come storming back in the second period. Bircher replacing Watson nearly proved costly as the seasoned veteran looked out of sorts on her first game of the season. With momentum gained 'Coll' drove down the left hand side of the pitch and managed to secure a short corner leading to the deadly Lambert duo working a good goal. At the halfway stage 'Coll' had certainly clawed their way back into the match and the game was definitely in the balance.

The second half proved a bridge too far – superior fitness, teamwork and finesse saw the Gladiators pull away, strong performances from Erdal, Armitage and Platt laid the foundations for Thomas and Watson to pull the strings – Bircher found her goal scoring touch as experience began to tell. As pressure mounted on the young College side the flood gates opened and the Gladiators took full advantage. A lack of discipline from Loudon, as she attempted to bully the more deft and agile Thomas, led to a succession of free kicks which were all coolly slotted by the imposing Fr Giles who calmly put the Gladiators out of sight. A difficult day at the office for 'Coll', work to be done!
