There is no better place in Britain for Kayaking and Canoeing, known collectively as "Paddle Sports", than in Scotland, and no independent school does more to take advantage of our proximity to some of the best paddling rivers than Glenalmond.
On half-day afternoons we use Loch Freuchie, Loch Tay and the River Tay and there are occasional weekend expeditions on the River Spey. Canoeing or open boating (Native American style) is used with junior pupils to promote team work and general paddling skills, whilst our swimming pool is used extensively to promote kayak strokes and manoeuvres. These skills are then applied to moving water in the warmer months of the year. National "star tests" to mark and celebrate proficiency in paddling are taken and, currently, we have one student embarking on his instructor training; an ideal ability for gap year opportunities.
Canoes have also been used successfully for Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions recently at Gold level both here in Scotland and in Portugal.
