OGGS Annual Meeting
The 2010 Old Glenalmond Golfing Society Annual Meeting was held at the Golf House Club Elie over the weekend of the 2nd/3rd October 2010.
Whilst the rain was pouring at the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor, the OGGS were treated to an extremely pleasant weekend in the East Neuk of Fife. On Saturday, the Scratch competition, the Boyes Cup was won by John Gordon with a characteristically tidy 73 which also won him the Veterans Trophy, just pipping David Russell. Alastair Hope won the Neish Cup with a nett 69 and Sian Gordon ensured a full trophy cabinet at the Gordon household retaining the Ladies Cup.
On Saturday evening, an excellent dinner was held at the Golf House Club with 44 people in total. Niall Farquharson proposed a toast to the OGGS and Alastair Hope replied on behalf of the OGGS. We were joined by the Golf House Club Captain Jimmy McQuarrie and his wife Lynne as well as Maureen Marshall from the College.
On Sunday, it was another calm day and the Stocks Tankard was won by David Rennie with 40 Stableford points, narrowly beating Alastair Barge who was making a welcome return to Elie and last won the Stocks in 1986! Despite it being an Exeat weekend we were joined by 5 boys from Coll - Fergus Sandison, Thomas Simmonds, Andreas Frey, Karl Frey and Henry Gray and also by parents, Mr and Mrs Sandison, Mr and Mrs Frey and Mr Gordon Simmonds.
Thank you to all 40 OGs of all ages and golfing abilities who made the effort to come over for various parts of the weekend.
The 2011 OGGS Annual Meeting will again be held at Elie over the weekend of the 1st & 2nd of October.

The Queen Victoria Jubilee Vase, a prestigious singles knockout competition at the R&A, was won, last year, by John Laird (Skrine's 1979-84) who defeated Graham Stewart (Matheson's 1976-81) in the Final on Saturday 18th September. The match went all the way to the 18th Green where John Laird won by 1 Hole. The trophy was presented by Colin Brown, Captain of the R&A and OG.

Coll Golf Scholar Carly Booth has become the youngest Scot ever to gain a place on the 2010 Ladies' European Golf Tour after finishing on three under par and in 14th place at the qualifying final at La Manga in Spain.
Because Carly does not celebrate her 18th birthday until June, the same month that she completes her golf scholarship here, rules dictate that she must be accompanied by a guardian when on tour.
"I'm really pleased," Carly said immediately after her win. "I will turn professional as soon as today is done. I'm still at school until June and, up until then, I'll travel with my mum, although I'll probably not play in too many tournaments."

OGGS vs Old Ampleforth
17 April 2009 at Muirfield
On a raw April morning on the East coast, 20 of us assembled for the morning singles at 8am. Winter gloves and woolly hats were the order of the day. In a very close tussle, the score stood at 5.5 to 4.5 in Glenalmond's favour at lunchtime. Last year, the first in the modern series of this fixture, Glenalmond prevailed comfortably morning and afternoon but clearly Ampleforth had boosted their side with some new talent. Our two (current) Halford Hewitt players had mixed fortunes, Bull losing and Primrose winning but it was three of Glenalmond's most experienced players that gave us the edge at lunch, Lawson, Harding Edgar and Ballantine all victorious. So, it seemed, the contest was finely poised and could have gone either way. However, something happened during the lunch break which swung fortunes dramatically. The OGs that had lost in the morning won in the afternoon; in fact every OG won in the afternoon and we took the foursomes 5-0. Special thanks to John MacLean (singles) and Jamie Skinner (foursomes) who stood in for the injured Michael Walker at short notice and both won. No tales of holes in one or heroic recoveries to report but a good day had by all and we plan to repeat the fixture next year.
