Glenalmond College Munro Club

Munro Club

Sir Hugh Munro first tabulated the 284 mountains in Scotland over 3000ft and we can climb any one of about 100 of these within a day's outing from Glenalmond.

The Munro Club gives pupils the chance to get away from it all, and lift their eyes unto the hills. It generally meets 3 times a term on Sundays. The mountain and route are chosen to suit the group and the weather forecast. This might be Cairngorm with ice axes and crampons in winter, scrambling on the Aonach Eagach above Glencoe in summer or simply striding over the heather of Beinn Ime in Arrochar. Pupils are unlikely to climb the same mountain twice in their time at Coll! For those who are not sure if it is for them, our equipment store can lend most items for trial outings. Pupils can sign up for any individual outing, with no further commitment.

Munro Club achievements 2010 - 2011

The Munro Club has again been enjoying the high life this year, with participants ranging from Junior Entry to Upper 6th. As the pupils progress they are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for route finding, pace-setting and navigation so that by the time they leave they should be fully competent to wander the hills safely themselves.

The early onset of winter this year has limited our range so far, but recent outings have included Ben Lui, Beinn a' Chleibh, Meall Corranaich, Meall a' Choire Leith and a couple of superb winter days on local favourites Ben Chonzie and Ben Vorlich, with the latter two giving excellent opportunity to practice crampon technique and ice axe self-arrest.
