The Colts A won a close game at Strathallan by 19 runs

Glenalmond chose to bat and in damp early conditions reached 142-3 declared off 29.5 overs. (G) Alex Campbell played a fine captain's innings and carried his bat to 53. He was ably supported by fellow opener (S) Rob Russell (35) and (S) Oli Wrigley (41). Strathallan's bowling and fielding kept Glenalmond under pressure throughout and ensured they didn't get a higher score than looked possible at times. In reply Glenalmond's depleted bowling attack struggled with consistency, with the notable exception of (G) Oli Russell's good left arm over medium pace (6-0-2-20) and also Captain Campbell, who chipped in with 3 wickets to add to his earlier 50. In a tense closing half hour Strathallan just fell short of the target and reached 124 all out off 23 overs.

Colts B win comfortably against Strathallan

After a rain affected season we travelled to Strathallan for their final match. Glenalmond elected to bat and scored 203-3 declared with with 48 from Paddy James Duff and 44 not out from Orlando Pritchard Barrett. We were expecting a certain victory and when Strathallan came into bat they subsequently lost three quick wickets but then they rallied and, to their credit, they passed 100 runs with still twenty overs to play. However, we broke through this partnership and, with only one over to go we took their final wicket with their score on 147 - an unbeaten season!

Junior Colts A v Strathallan Sat 25th June.

Won by 9 wickets

On a surprisingly warm and sunny afternoon Glenalmond won an important toss and invited Strathallan to bat, a decision that was to prove wise. Porter and Goodfellow (both P) opened the bowling with great enthusiasm and ability, with Porter striking in the first over. Strathallan were put under real pressure as the Coll bowling attack bowled tightly. Rathborne (P) came in to the attack and made huge in roads in to the Strath middle order taking 4-16 and with Porter bowling with pace and accuracy at the other end they quickly reduced Strath to a modest 77 all out. Excellent fielding led to three run outs as the Coll side were most impressive in the field. A solid start from Rathborne (32 no) and Porter with the bat laid the foundation for some positive shots from Goodfellow (30 no) as the side raced to a comprehensive victory in the 15th over. This was a fitting performance to end the term and we wish Hamish, Gordon, Blair, Tom and Dougal all the very best as they head off to the Merchiston festival with the U15's.

Scottish Schools National Cricket Finals Day

Semi Final versus The Gordon's schools - Won by 9 wickets

Qualifying as the representative for Tayside and Fife, Glenalmond College Development XI, coached by Peter Golden and Huw Thomas, headed to the picturesque Doo'cot Park in Perth to compete in the National cricket finals. A combination side picked from our talented Colts and Junior Colts outfits were drawn against The Gordon's schools from Aberdeen in the first semi final and approached the day with much anticipation and excitement. On a gloriously sunny morning we won the toss and elected to bowl. It was obvious from the outset that the opposition had a fine opening batsman amongst their number and as a result we were on the back foot from early on. An explosive start from the Scotland trialist left us under pressure, but some fine bowling from both Porter (P) and Galbraith (G) began to claw back the momentum. Farquharson (G) also bowled a fine spell to help add to the pressure. Some fine fielding by Davidson (P) ran the opening batsman out for 56 and this led to a mini collapse and eventually the opposition were restricted to 103 -7. An excellent start to the chase was provided by Rathborne and Porter (both P). After the wicket of Rathborne, Captain Galbraith joined Porter in what proved to be an explosive innings. The chase was completed in the 13th over with Porter not out on 45 and Galbraith not out on 46.

Final versus George Watson's - Won by 42 runs

Having completed a relatively comprehensive victory against Glasgow Academy, Watson's entered the final in confident mood. The toss was lost and we were invited to bat first. This game was to prove an entirely different challenge for our batting line-up. Watson's certainly started the game well and we were put under pressure from the very first ball. Porter went early and Rathborne was prevented from taking the quick singles that had marked the start to the first game. Galbraith also found runs hard to come by and a period of consolidation followed. As bowling changes were made however, momentum began to change, and a fine partnership followed. Galbraith ended on 50 not out and Rathborne secured a solid 28. With a cameo performance from Wrigley (S), we eventually reached a modest, but defendable 120. The second innings was without doubt our best period of the day. Our fielding was magnificent with four stunning catches amongst the highlights. Our bowling was tight and when the leg spin of Farquharson joined the mix, we were already on top. Farquharson bowled with poise and guile and took four good wickets to leave the Watson's line up in disarray. Despite some big hitting towards the end, Watson's were finally bowled out for 78 leaving us as Scottish Champions.

A fine all round team performance drew much praise from the assembled crowd and certainly highlighted the strength of our junior cricket at present. Special mention must go to Tom Galbraith who, without doubt, was the man of the finals day.

Match Report

At a windy and wet Anniesland Glenalmond at last found some form. In a 25 over game Glenalmond won the toss and chose to bat on a lively damp wicket. After a steady start, the openers were removed leaving Davies R. (86*) and Bradley J. (32) to develop a fine 3rd wicket partnership of 75 runs. Galbraith T. (25) again offered sound support taking Coll to a total of 178-4.

Junior Colts v Glasgow High

Won by 140 runs

On a difficult pitch under damp conditions the Junior Colts produced an excellent all round performance to comprehensively beat Glasgow High. Tom Stodart (P) being the mainstay of the first innings with an impressive 51 which allowed us to total 153 - 6 in our twenty overs. This was a good score on a slow wicket which certainly provided the bowlers with a good opportunity to attack and attack they did. Outstanding opening bowling from both Porter (P) and Goodfellow(P) reduced Glasgow to 13 all out, Porter taking three for ten and Goodfellow four for none!!!

SENIOR XI v DOLLAR

SATURDAY 14th MAY (A)

Match Report

On a leave-out weekend, Glenalmond fulfilled the fixture with Dollar by producing an 'A' XI. Coll won the toss and found some early life in the pitch to remove one opener. However, this beckoned the arrival of Phillips from Barbados who bludgeoned and plundered the Glenalmond attack for 106 in the 30 over innings. Dollar finished their allocation on a very healthy 173-5.

Francis T. (29) and Fyfe L. made a positive start with good running but with the demise of Fyfe and Davies R. - both having got a 'start'- Glenalmond failed to establish any effective partnerships and were bowled out for 109 in 26.2 overs.

Dollar 173-5

Glenalmond 109 all out

Dollar won by 64 runs

1st XI vs MCC

TUESDAY 3rd MAY (H)

On a stunning day at Glenalmond, the MCC opted to bat and, despite some improved bowling and fielding from the 1st XI, posted an imposing score of 212-5. G. Maiden (44), S. Smith (54) and N. Peet (59) all making powerful contributions.

With the exception of Davies R. (34), the top order failed to fire as Glenalmond reached the final 20 overs requiring 130 runs with a mere five wickets in hand. However, the lower order batted positively to reach a respectable 179-9 at the close, with Smith G. and King B. showing good resilience in the final few overs. Carmichael S. (33); King P. (26) and Smith G. (25) 'wagged the tail' effectively.

1st XI vs OG XI

SUNDAY 1st MAY (H)

Match Report

After the disappointment of the opening match against Merchiston, Glenalmond were keen to make amends when invited to bat against an OG XI containing four present pupils. Russell took full advantage of some loose bowling and made a fine 60. Fyfe offered good support (22) as did Bradley (27). However, having established a good foundation, the lower middle order spurned the opportunity to score over 180 and succumbed to a below par total of 142.

Tom Robertson added to his 4 wickets by scoring a rapid 42 in a fine all-round performance as the OG's made a good start before R Davies and P King (4-31)hauled the College back into contention. Tim Harper (23) regained the initiative in the last few overs and was joined by captain, David Woodcock who scored the winning runs in the final over as the College snatched defeat from the jaws of victory!

Glenalmond 142-9 (Russell G. 60; Robertson T 4-23)

OG XI 143-9 (Robertson T. 42; King P. 4-31)

OG XI won by 1 wicket.

1st XI vs MERCHISTON

SATURDAY 30th APRIL (A)

Match Report

In the opening game of the season, played on a format of 40 overs per side, Glenalmond won the toss and elected to bat. Fyfe and Russell made a cautious but relatively trouble free start, scoring 26 for the first wicket partnership, before Fyfe slipped turning for a third and was run-out. Thereafter, Galbraith was the only batsman to show any real resilience against a fine spell of swing bowling from C. Sole which produced the excellent return of 4-6. Coll were bowled out for a disappointing 65.

Merchiston reached the target for the loss of one wicket with the Glenalmond bowlers struggling to find much penetration at this early stage of the season.

Glenalmond 65 all out (Sole C. 4-6)

Merchiston 67-1 (Baker 37*)

Merchiston won by 9 wkts.

Jnr Colts A XI v Arbroath CC - Tuesday 17th May

Won by three wickets.

Arbroath 133 - 6

Porter (P) 3-16

Goodfellow (P) 1-12

Glenalmond 136 -7

Rathborne (P) 47

Despite good spells from Porter and Goodfellow, Coll allowed a spirited Arbroath side to rack up a decent score in what was to prove a most exciting match. We started slowly in response and despite an explosive performance from Rathborne we were in considerable trouble at 78 – 6 after 17 overs. Top order wickets were given away cheaply and we found ourselves up against an organised and committed Arbroath. However, Dougal Forsyth (P) and Harry Hartley-Metcalfe (S) showed real character in the face of defeat and helped claw us back into the game. Some powerful stroke play from Forsyth and a really sensible approach from Hartley-Metcalfe helped to swing the momentum our way. A big 23rd over from Hartley – Metcalfe set up a final over where we only required two to win. With style and an air of cool, Hartley –Metcalfe clipped the first ball of the over for four to secure an exciting victory. Not a vintage performance but a victory none the less.

Colts B v Merchiston April 30th

On a sun kissed afternoon the U15 B team travelled to Merchiston. With only one practice this term we were expecting a tough match, but with some intelligent batting Glenalmond reached 161 for 4 declared after 28 overs with contributions from Ed Brooksbank 45 and Paddy James Duff 44 not out. This left Merchiston 22 overs to score 162 runs and they were soon on 50 for no loss after 6 overs. However, with straight bowling from Dracup, 4 wickets for 27 off 6 over,s Glenalmond broke through their top four batsmen to reveal a weak tail. In the end Merchiston were bowled out for 105 - an excellent victory.
