Glenalmond College Golf Society

Glenalmond is fortunate to own a course designed by former Open Champion, James Braid. It is a 9 hole course with 2 different tees on each hole, allowing 18 holes to be played. Golf is primarily a summer term activity and players should preferably have their own clubs, but clubs and balls can be supplied to beginners. Games sessions involve either coaching for beginners or regular stroke competitions with a season-eclectic competition (where the best score at each hole throughout the season is recorded). The College is represented on alternate years in the Scottish Wayfarers Golf Match which plays an R & A team on the Old Course at St Andrews, one of the highlights of the year. We play matches against local schools in the Perth & Kinross Schools Golf League, as well as an annual fixture against Old Glenalmond Golf Society. Glenalmond hosts the Scottish Independent Schools Golf Competition each year in June. The course is occasionally closed for matches, but otherwise pupils are free to play in their spare time and at weekends.

 News from Trinity 2011

The 14th Scottish Independent Schools Golf Competition took place at The Cairnies, Glenalmond on Saturday 11th June. The weather was mixed with light rain for most of the time and the fairways were very tight.

The Glenalmond team of Fergus Sandison, Thomas Simmonds and Marc Mauracher won the team competition, which is the aggregate of the 3 team member's gross scores, with a total of 233. In second place came Loretto with a total of 240 and Merchiston were third with a team total of 256.

Fergus Sandison had the best individual score of  the day with a gross 69, which, I believe, equals the course record score by a pupil, set by Colin Robertson in 1977. The prize for the best nett score of the day went to Thomas Simmonds with a 69.

Glenalmond Wins Golf Championship

At the Perth and Kinross Individual and Team Championships at Alyth Golf Club on 2 May 2011, Glenalmond was represented by Andreas Frey, Fergus Sandison, Thomas Simmonds and Karl Frey. The sun shone but a cold east wind and dry, hard fairways made conditions difficult and in a field of about 30 boys no-one was under par even taking handicaps into account. The best score of the day was 71 from Bradley Neil, a Scottish Internationalist from Blairgowrie High School with Andreas in second place with a very commendable score of 74.

When the totals for each team were counted there was a tie between Glenalmond and Blairgowrie for the best 3 scores and the tie-breaker rule had to be implemented. Fortunately our fourth player, Karl, had a better score than his Blairgowrie counterpart, making Glenalmond the Perth and Kinross Schools Stroke Play Champions for 2011.

This rounded off a fine weekend for Andreas as he was selected to play for the Perth and Kinross Schools team in the Scottish County Championships at Murrayshall Golf Club, Perth on Monday 6 June. On Sunday he was selected to play for the Perthshire Under 16s Team in their match against Lothians after a winning display at Dunning on Sunday.
