Glenalmond Girls' Hockey Results

Girls Hockey Tour

One of our youngest touring sides to date travelled down to the North of England for their end of season tour. Four Upper Sixth Formers, six Fifth Formers and three Fourth Formers departed Coll on a wet and blustery Friday afternoon expecting to be greeted by some slightly kinder weather down south. Saturday morning was spent visiting Durham and as the morning progressed, the clouds thickened.

By the time of our match at 2pm at Barnard Castle School it was horizontal rain and wind on a pitch that makes our top astro seem kind to us. Nevertheless, in true Glenalmond style, the girls dealt with the conditions brilliantly and played some spectacular hockey, particularly in our mid field, who ran the opposition ragged. A well deserved 3-1 victory put the girls in high spirits for the final match against Sedbergh on Sunday.

Both teams were exhausted both mentally and physically but it was, nevertheless, an exciting match. Sedbergh dominated the play in the first half and were up on us at half-time. This match meant a lot to the girls but to no one more that the Upper Sixth leavers and Captain Emma Sanderson and vice-captain Alice Onslow. They challenged more in the second half but it just wasn't our day. There is no doubt that on a good day, they were equal both on ability and tactical play but we just couldn't find it in us and were extremely disappointed to lose 1-3. However, the most important thing that we should take way from these touring experiences is not just the sport but the all the other benefits that we gain from visiting different schools, meeting new people and experiencing different environments.

Probably our most exciting match of the season - the standard of hockey was superb and the girls were moving the ball around with speed and skill. Rebecca scored fairly early on in the game an outstanding shot into the top of the goal played after advantage in the circle had been given. Fettes replied before half time and the second half was very tight and close - I may be biassed but I believe we were the better team - but it is the score line that counts. Man of the match - Fiona Squire - great play in defense v a real speedy Gonzalez. A fabby way to end the season - the 'family' can be very proud of their performance.

The team should be very proud of the way they played. It was particularly muddy on the grass pitch but they never gave up. The only goal of the game was scored by Fettes in the first half. Heather Campbell started off the game in goal but since it was her last time playing hockey at Coll she asked at half time if anyone would like to switch with her. Even though shed never played in goal before Antonia volunteered for the position and didn't let a ball past her. Even though it would've been great if we could have scored the girls were playing with two fewer people so they did an amazing job with what they had.

The last match of the season, a rematch against Fettes, although this time on astro, not grass, and at home. I was delighted to see the girls play a much better team game than they have in a while. The defence stuck to their opponents and were much improved on the man marking. We did have a few great breaks but sadly the girls could not follow it through and score a goal. Still it was a full out effort from the team and although it was not a win they should be proud of the way they played: great effort, especially from the younger 2nd form players, Maggie Maxwell, Olivia Wise and Kitty Ballentine. All show great promise for next year. The others who played well were Kayleigh, the team captain, her vice captain Carolina, Sasha Ogilvie and Jamaica Radcliffe. Well done, girls, you deserve a well earned holiday.

We started the game with a positive attitude - all fighting for the ball and not giving up. Unfortunately they scored first but with determination we levelled the game with a great goal from Annabel. At half time it was 2-1 to the opposition but a stiff talking to from Mr Law put us right for the second half which we drew 1 goal apiece - Rebecca scored an amazing goal - top corner. A really great effort from the team (family)!!

Another superb team performance- it was wonderful to see a great display of passing and very determined play initiated in defense and ending in goals. The usual terrier like performance from Polly is an inspiration to the team. Captains Charlotte and Kirsty led from the front with faultless displays. It was a pleasure to coach from the side - they needed little assistance. We must not get over confident though - our next fixture is Mary Erskine - a good challenge which the girls are capable of doing very well.

We started well with centre pass and possession of the ball. We were passing the ball up to the forwards and had some shots on target. However we lost possession of the ball which led for them to have a break for goal. They scored this was due to a lack of concentration and not man-on-man marking. However we came back stronger and the half time score was 1-1. We ran to our positions and were ready for a win. We had possession of the ball for the majority of the second half. They had a few shots on goal but were unable to score. We had many chances on goal and came out on top with a win of 3-1.

A clinical display of the girls playing a great game of hockey. 2-0 up at half time we were lucky to have some half time advice from Allan Law and stormed away with another 6 goals in the second half. A silly mistake on a final minute short corner allowed QVS the opportunity to score once. However a great display of hockey from the 2nd XI.

Potentially the strongest team that we have put out this season made an unimpressive start and before we knew where we were, we were 3-0 down at half time. What a turn around in the second half - the whole teams effort level lifted from 50 to 100% and after a good first goal - there was no stopping the girls. Perhaps if we had played a few minutes more it could have been a win for us. We look forward to our rematch in a few weeks time. Thanks to Jemima who played for us admirably in goal in the absence of Annabel T due to injury. Whole team are players of the match - great team effort.

The Glenalmond girls staged a gritty comeback from a 2-0 half time deficit and share the spoils. The pace of Maclean-Boyd and Eden created problems for the Fettes back line. However, it was first blood to Fettes ten minutes into the half after some slack marking at the back allowed their forward an easy back post finish. For the remainder of the half it was largely a one sided affair with the Coll girls on the receiving end. The midfield struggled to contain confident surges from the visitors and with 5 minutes remaining Fettes had a two goal cushion. The second half was a different story all together with the Coll girls pouring their hearts and souls into their hockey. McHardy was particularly strong in the midfield with some excellent tackling, helped along by the steely determination of Strachan and Winton. In the forward line, Hunter distributed well, Maclean-Boyds speed kept causing a headache and Andersons composed control around the Fettes D looked particularly threatening. Midway through the half the persistence paid off and Eden slotted home for the Blues. However, Fettes came quickly back into the game and very nearly had the ball in the Glenalmond net after a goal mouth scramble. The Glenalmond defence from here on in proved watertight with Dent and Douglas closing down any Fettesian forwards. With five minutes left on the clock Strachan popped up at the back post and coolly guided the ball over the line. The last five minutes were all Glenalmond and Campbell, who had now moved into a forward position, looked very dangerous down the left hand side. With the Coll girls throwing everything at Fettes in the dying seconds, there simply were not enough minutes on the clock and the match ended all square. The ladies of the IVs should feel very proud indeed of their second half performance. While McHardy was very strong in her first game at centre midfield, the Athenian of the day must go to the Captain, Fern Whitelaw whose leadership and tireless energy spearheaded the comeback.

This was not one of our best matches and we were playing a match on grass for the first time. This Meant the game was much slower and the ball didn't travel as far, which was frustrating. We had the odd moment of brilliance, when the girls got the ball out to the side and up the field, but sadly we did not manage to turn these into goals. Those whose playing stood out were Annis, Sasha andMaggie. The defenders were under pressure for most of the game and although they did well to stop the ball, they sadly often pushed the ball straight back to the other side. There is a lot to learn and practice in the next 2 weeks before our next match and we get another chance to playFettes at the end of the term, this time onAstro, and hopefully then we can show what the girls are really capable of.

This match with our rivals was always going to be close. After some great play from the midfield, Alice Onslow provided a pass that was deflected in to the goal by Kate Squire, and for the next 10 minutes Glenalmond took control of possession. After half time, Strathallan began to challenge our defence and after a lucky break they equalled the score. The game remained fast and an excellent save from Emma Sanderson kept the score level. The forwards were working hard and had many attempts at goal in the second half which kept the pressure on the Strathallan defence. Particular mention should go to Olivia Jackson who had many good runs up the centre of the pitch, continuously providing opportunities to the forwards and to Lydia Proctor who, as always, stayed calm under pressure and made several great saves. We were very unlucky not to win the game in the final minutes, when a well worked corner and deflection from Isobel Houston went narrowly past the post. The final score was 1-1, and every single player on the Glenalmond team was content, knowing that they had put in their maximum effort.

This was a very tense and close match. We started with enthusiasm in this much anticipated match but unfortunately Strath scored 2 goals in the first half. However we kicked into action and scored a fabulous goal from one of our now much practised short corners. (Rebecca Wallace) The second half was a real battle and we had a couple of superb shots on goal. Annabel F was very unlucky not to score thus leaving the final score 1-2. A very close game and we are ready for our next opponents!

Although it was important for both teams to win especially this match against Strathallan, the atmosphere on the pitch was very fair and friendly. We had a few good chances, a lot of fun and the goal (by Rosina Findlay) in the last 10 minutes made our win perfect.

This game showed us what can happen when we have a sudden lapse in concentration. A promising first half with the score 1-2 at half-time saw some settled play and us working well as a unit, building up play. After a half-time team talk where 'possession' and 'channeling' were our key words we failed to respond to a hugely determined Strathallan team. They came out of the blocks fighting and we could not challenge them. Two consecutive goals early on saw heads drop a little and within the blink of an eye, Strathallan were on a roll that we struggled to stop. A well deserved win for them and some more lessons to learn for us. Onwards and upwards; we focus on our next game and work harder to rectify our errors.

It was a great pity that we did not manage to score a goal and win the game. In the first half the girls' play was fantastic, they were in all the right places at all the right times. The defence was very impressive with Annis Macdonald Fitzimmonds,Kayleigh Donaldson and Carolina Ginesta forming an impressive team. We then had some very hard working Mids/Forwards in the form of Erriad Gaskell, Maggie Maxwell, Sasha Ogilvie and Jamaica Radcliffe. In fact the whole team, including the subs, played really well. We were on the attack most of the 1st half and there were some great opportunities, but unfortunately they did not result in a goal. In the second half of the game,Strathallan came out fighting and put much more pressure on us, but thanks to our wonderful goalie Fiona Williamson we managed to keep them at bay. So really pleased with the girls' playing and particularly their team work; let's hope we can keep up the good work for our remaining games.

We went into this game knowing it would be one of our toughest games of the season and tried to prepare accordingly. Determined to control from the start, we took the game to Watson's and endeavoured to make them feel our presence. The pace of their game caught us a little off guard at the start but particular mention should go to our defensive line who had their work cut out from the start and were exemplary in their fighting spirit. In the first half we were by no means out of the game and were able to play moments of fantastic hockey with possession being kept and the ball being worked up the pitch by defensive and midfield lines. At half-time we were 0-3 down; a perfectly respectable score. Unfortunately in the second half the gaps began to appear as we struggled to keep up with the pace of the game. Nevertheless, particular mention should go to Alice Onslow, who was stoic in her determination throughout the game and on many occasions, held the game together.

This was the teams first match and they knew George Watsons would be a tough competitor just by the sheer numbers they have to pull athletes from. Even though there were players on our team that had never played hockey before they did really well and held the opposition to only 3 goals in the first half. At the start of the match we struggled to get the ball away from our goal side but you could see the girls improve as the ball was moved and kept further down the pitch as the game progressed. Annie did a fabulous job in goal, making many saves to keep the score a lot lower than it could have been.

It was always going to be a tough game against Watsons: however we were determined to play our best. Throughout the match we kept on top of our marking, always making life difficult for our opposition. Our man of the match was Elisha Johnson who worked well with her defence, talking to them and always being there to stop Watsons getting a goal.

The U14As produced a strong team performance characterised by tenacious defending and sustained pressure on the opposition in all areas of the pitch. Player of the Match, Kitty Webster, held the central defence firmly with a creative and driving Georgie Horne. Link-ups with Issy Farquarson in central midfield were effective and served to disrupt the Watson's plan for long periods of the game. Watson's were effective at driving up the right channel and then striking across the D, sweeping in from the far post; this approach generated 3 of the 4 goals. This route was effectively cut off by some focused marking by Rosie Hamilton in the latter stages of the game. The whole team's work rate was admirable and the continued effort and commitment was noted by visiting coaches and parents alike. The superb team spirit of the U14As was very much summed up after the game; the entire team waited with the captain to see off the visiting buses. Brilliant.

I am pleased with the results and particularly delighted with the play and effort from the girls. Our defence was under constant pressure, but they kept their nerves, and did a good job of man marking. Especial mention goes to Kayleigh Davidson playing with her head as well as her heart and also to our outstanding and ever improving (new to hockey this term) Carolina Ginesta. There was also some really great play from all the Mids, Maggie Maxwell, Emily Simpson and Sasha Ogilvie, and they did a good job in Defence and transition to attack. The forwards did not get much time on the ball and we had a few chances that unfortunately we could not turn in to goals. Man of the Match goes to our brilliant Captain and Goal Keeper, Erraid Gaskell who certainly did more to keep the score down than anyone. I must also thank her Mother for making both the teams and coaches day, by giving us all delicious chocolate muffins. I am sure that we will make a mark as the friendliest team George Watsons have played for a while. I have great hopes for future matches.

Glenalmond started this game very well and applied a lot of pressure for long periods in the Dollar half. This pressure was rewarded when I. Houston found herself free to score into an open goal. Dollar fought back when they won a penalty corner and score with a well worked routine. 1-1 at half-time and the 1st XI were confident of winning if they reproduced the 1st half performance. After the restart Dollar went ahead from a penalty corner when a Dollar forward reacted first to a penalty corner rebound. Glenalmond continued to push for a goal but were caught on the counter attack and at 3-1 the game looked out of their reach. Continued effort was rewarded when M. MacLean converted after a sweeping move down the right wing. Glenalmond felt they could get an equaliser and pressed very hard, I. Houston thought she had done it only to have her goal disallowed (feet).

Dollar was a tough game. From the beginning, we were playing uphill which pushed our fitness levels. However, in the second half we managed to press on and achieve a goal. This was a game that was end to end throughout. The team continues to go from strength to strength and a 2-1 lead at half-time was deserved. An excellent corner gave us our first goal from Kitty Webster and some great team work between Kitty Webster and Izzy Farquharson help to set up our second goal. Some lack of concentration in the second half allowed a determined Dollar to come back into the game and a final score of 2-4 was disappointing for the team. Lessons have been learnt and we continue to move onwards and upwards.

Glenalmond 1st XI welcomed Kilgraston knowing that it would be a tough match but looking to put in a good performance and collect a win. Having six players unavailable due to district training it gave a chance to other players looking to claim a position in the team for future games. Showing that the 1st XI squad had strength and depth the team stepped up to the required performance level and played some very good hockey. Kilgraston themselves were missing players due to district training, defended well, making Glenalmond work very hard for the opening goal. Once the first goal went in Glenalmond was able to score 5 more, the goals coming from, A. Flowerdew, A. Onslow, M. MacPhie, C Houston and K. Squire.

A slow start found us in trouble early on. With some talented Kilgraston players we found ourselves on the back foot throughout the first half. We were unable to respond quickly enough and their simple pace in the midfield and up front caused havoc for our defence and we were 0-3 down at half-time. After a stern half-time team talk we found our focus early in the second half and managed to play the hockey that we had begun to see in the previous match but it was too little, too late. A second half score of 1-1 was a better indication of the potential we have but this was an outstanding Kilgraston side that we simply didn't respond to quickly enough.

With the return of some of our key players from the 1sts this year we met Loretto with a strong team. Having worked on some key skills that let us down last week the girls were well prepared for this match. In goal Holly worked well with the defence to make sure everyone kept their focus. Hannah-Jane Headon and Eilidh Richardson in particular played some outstanding hockey and gave a clear impression that they are always in control. In the mid field Cat Loudon worked tirelessly working up and back in order to secure the ball aided by Holly Craven who also played some tremendous hockey and managed to get us on the score sheet. A fantastic effort from all the girls, well done. Thank you to all the parents who came to support us.

We played well throughout our Loretto match. Our defence worked hard to ensure the ball was removed quickly and effectively out of the 'D.' Our confidence was lifted when the final whistle went, finishing with a 1-1 draw. Everyone was pleased with our performance on the pitch and we were awarded 'Team of the Week.' Our man of the match was Torie Clark who tried so hard, saving loads of goals and always getting the ball out of the 'D'.

The first half was not the most impressive hockey that I have seen them play and it took us a while to get into our stride. 2-0 down by half-time we had to have some stern words at our half-time talk and the results speak volumes. We returned to the pitch self-assured and determined to rectify our lack lustre performance in the first half. One goal was quickly followed by a second but then Loretto countered and the intensity grew. The last 10 minutes of the game were nerve racking to say the least but particular mention should go to Kitty Webster and Georgie Horne in defence, who worked well as a unit and showed great vision in their distribution of the ball. Up front we showed how dynamic we can be and Tara Houston, our player of the match, deserves a special mention, not only for her work rate but her ability to cause a little chaos for the opposing defence. The second half showed us that simple hockey really does work!

This was our first outing as a team. Many of the team had never played in a proper match before and only held a hockey stick for the first time 9 days ago. The team played extremely well, giving it their all. They have all to be congratulated on their great team formations, with pupils with more experience helping the new girls and all working together. The defence was led by Susannah and Kayleigh and they did a fantastic job of keeping a solid back line which was difficult for the Loretto team to break through. The mids led by Jamaica ran up and down the pitch never losing their concentration, and constantly attacking and defending when necessary. The forwards were led by Emily, who also played extremely well and really put the pressure on the other team. Also playing well was Lottie who was not always near the ball, but played a beautifully tactical position, which broke their defences. This really was a great game to start the season and I am delighted with the enthusiasm and contributions of all the players.

The 1st XI squad were in positive mood and took to the pitch knowing the previous week's work at pre-season was all done for this game. Glenalmond started the game slowly, nerves playing their part. However it wasn't long before the team produced some lovely attacking play the midfield of O Jackson, A Flowerdew and A Onslow taking control of the game. Finally the deadlock was broken when one of the sweeping attacking moves finished in a goal mouth scramble when Glenalmond reacted quicker to see the ball over the line. This help the team's confidence and the girls upped the tempo and intensity to produce two more goals before the break. With the 2nd half came a much more confident performance. Glenalmond stayed focused and maintained great pressure knowing that it would pay off and pay off it did, scoring 3 more goals to finish the game 6-0 winners. Overall a good performance for the 1st game of the season, with many good individual performances.

What a start to the season! Three days in and such a promising performance which bodes well for the rest of the season. The first half was fairly even with neither side controlling the game but after our half-time team talk, it is fair to say that we dominated the game. Up front, we displayed great pace and some excellent linking play between our midfields and forwards gave us many an opportunity to score but unfortunately we were unable to convert. Even though it was on the dreaded grass, our game showed much potential and with it a group of individuals who lapped up information and tried to transfer it into the game. A promising start upon which to build.
