On Monday, January 18th Glenalmond hosted a STEM activity session run by The Smallpeice Trust, an educational charity providing exciting programmes to promote engineering careers to young people and to enhance aptitude for problem-solving, creativity, design, and engineering.
All the 3rd form took part in the Wind Turbine Challenge, seeking to build a wind turbine that minimises costs, yet generates as much energy as possible, with a further requirement that the tower should be free-standing and structurally robust to support heavy components and moving parts.
Each of 12 teams was assessed on the standard of their project design, the building costs (working to itemised material prices) and the actual power generated from air blown by an electric fan, together with the effectiveness of their team-working and presentation.
The winning team is pictured with their wind turbine.
