Glenalmond and the First World War (link to pdf file)
With the deaths in 2009 of Harry Patch and Henry Allingham, the two last surviving United Kingdom veterans of World War One, a link to the past was broken. It would be all too easy to forget the horrors of the Western Front as we move forwards to the centenary of the Great War for Civilisation and to forget the comfortable freedoms for which men like Harry and Henry fought.
Thus we go to the Battlefields to honour and to remember one specific OG and his friends. In remembering those who died in fighting for their country between 1914 and 1918, we also make a living acknowledgement to those who give their lives every day in the name of freedom and in service for their country.
If we can bring young people closer to understanding the horrors and folly of war and the sacrifices which are made, then this surely is a worthy and desirable educational target.
