Two matches are played against Glenalmond College each year.
The first match this year was held in February, the match report is below.
The second match takes place at Commem on the first Saturday in July - 3rd July.
The first OG Hockey game of 2010 threw up a keenly contested and entertaining 3-3 draw. Having arrived at Glenalmond with a reasonably strong side, the OG team were hopeful, if not expectant of a victory.
It's fair to say that the OG's started slowly which resulted in the school enjoying much of the early ascendancy. This early pressure resulted in the first goal after a penalty flick was awarded following a cynical challenge from the OG's keeper which tarnished an otherwise excellent performance from David Woodcock in goal. However, a well worked goal, finished by Richard Mill, ensured the OGs approached half time on level terms. With one eye on the half time whistle, the OGs were undone by a well executed counter attack from the school, and it was they who went into the break with the narrowest of leads.
The second half started as the first had finished, with the school continuing to move the ball well around the pitch. An inevitable third goal followed to make the score 3-1 and almost put the game beyond doubt. This sparked a period of dominance from the OG side, which resulted in two goals in the final quarter of the match. The first of which was from a well worked short corner, scored by James Brunton, and the latter due to a sharp finish from Struan Brown from a very tight angle. The final whistle was certainly well received by a tiring OG side and marked the end of a thoroughly enjoyable contest.
In a game where the OG team were, in periods, out classed by a skilful school side, some decent passages of play and determined defending ensured a satisfying draw. Honours even until next timeā¦.
