Ethos
In 2006, Cairnies was totally refurbished and reopened as a fifth form girls' house close to the golf course.
The aim at Cairnies is to welcome the 5th form girls from both Home and Lothian creating an environment where they will not only be happy and feel at home but where they can succeed academically and socially.
The ethos of Cairnies is to foster independence, respect for others, and team working. The girls are encouraged to recognise and nurture their abilities, to participate in the School's many activities and events, to ask for help and support when needed, to help each other and to take responsibility for making Cairnies a wonderful place to live. The House Council has a key role in this (see below).
Housemistress
Having previously worked as a teacher in Glenalmond, I was delighted to return as Housemistress in 2010 after a period of about 6 years during which time I have been doing several things.
My son was born in early 2006 and is delighted to help me to look after what he calls "Our girls, Mummy". In addition, I set up and ran a small internet business for some years and most recently worked for Children 1ST helping vulnerable children and young people.
The College has always held a special place in my heart as it was here that I completed my teacher training and started my teaching career. Many friends remain at the College and the new people I have met are so helpful and supportive. Glenalmond is truly a close knit and supportive environment for both staff and pupils and Cairnies will reflect this.
The Staff
Janine Erdal is Assistant Housemistress at Cairnies. Theresa McLaughlin, a Chemistry and Biology teacher joined us from Derbyshire in 2010 and Heather Mullin, Sports Assistant, from the United States this September. All three ladies are house and academic tutors. It is good to have a team on hand which can offer such a broad range of subject experience and varied personal interests.
The House Council
One girl from each of the five flats is elected to be on the House Council and we aim to meet fortnightly. The purpose of the Council is to bring the girls' thoughts on all House matters to my attention with the aim of making Cairnies into the best house the girls, my team and I could wish for. I strongly believe in inclusiveness and I know that I do not have all the best ideas so I am looking to the Council to help with this.
House Prefects
With only Fifth Formers in the house, Cairnies is unique in having Fifth Form Flat Prefects. Each flat elected their prefect, who assists the house staff team and also make up the House Council. This is an excellent opportunity for the elected girls to shine and show what they are capable of, something that will stand them in good stead when they eventually join the Sixth Form. The Flat Prefects will change termly as the room allocations change, thus providing a good opportunity for quite a few of the girls.
Child Protection Officer
I am also the School's Child Protection and Pupil Welfare Officer. Apart from associated paperwork and communication, I investigate any reported bullying, cyber bullying etc, take any necessary action after consultation with the Warden and offer counselling if required. For any situation requiring longer term or more specialised counselling I would contact parents.
Please feel free to contact me, in confidence, with any such matter or any House matter.
