Craig Henderson, Housemaster

Community spirit and togetherness epitomise the spirit in Goodacre's. We pride ourselves in our involvement in everything that Glenalmond offers and the support we provide each other. Goodacre's is an environment in which high standards are expected but, at the same time, I am mindful of the fact that the House is also the boys' home.

I have run Goodacre's since 2005, with the support of my wife, Nicola who also teaches at Coll. We have a three year-old daughter, Beatrice, a baby son Stan and a friendly mongrel dog. I teach Biology and can be found on the sports pitches most afternoons either coaching or supporting the boys.

Junior Tennis Success

Congratulations to the Junior tennis team who swept all before them to claim the title this year. Led by Richard Tanner and partner Rory Farquarson the team finished a healthy 6 points ahead of their nearest rivals. Archie Farquarson and Geordie Houldsworth won all three matches and Alexander Campbell and George Maclachlan weighed in with a couple of wins as well.

Junior Cricket

A fabulous performance from the Junior cricketers brought them to within a whisker of success. Having beaten Skrine's, Matheson's and Reid's they faced a winner take all match against Patchell's whose superior size and strength edged the trophy. Highlights included Tom Galbraith's bowling figures, 3-20 v Skrines, 4-14 v Mathesons including a hat-trick; Webster's 27 not out against Mathesons followed by a golden duck against Reid's; Charlie Braithwaite's 5-35 figures against the eventual winners Patchell's as well as Beetle's 25 not out total against Patchell's. This was a grand team effort and it was great to see the Juniors using squad rotation to ensure all played a part in this success.

The Scottish Island Peaks Race

Well done to Andrew McHardy who stepped into the breech at the last minute to take part in this year's event. He had very little time to train for the event but certainly did not let the team down and ran his leg of the race very well indeed.

Senior Athletics Success

The Senior boys ran out triumphant in the Athletics competition this term winning both the Field events and the Track events. Elliott Hardie deserves a lot of praise for putting together a winning team and ensuring the House competed in every event. The 100 meters was a thrilling contest in which George Smith produced a fabulous run coming very close to the school record. The highlight of the event was the two relays (100 and 300 metres), at the end of the competition, both of which Goodacre's managed to win.

Bath Hockey Tour Representatives

The first XI hockey team set off to the annual Hockey Festival at Bath with 5 Goodacre's boys swelling the ranks. Tom Robertson, Tom Loudon, George Smith, Fergus Campbell and Tom Russell all played their part in a very successful trip where Coll won 3 games and drew the final game to return north unbeaten.

Senior House Hockey

Tom Robertson and Tom Loudon, fresh from the successful tour to Bath, led the House team to within a hair's breadth of capturing the House Hockey competition. Having comprehensively seen off Patchell's 3-0 (Goals from Carnegie, McCoss and Smith)in the semi-final Goodacre's met Reid's in the final. One cruel deflected shot was all it took for Reid's to win the match 1-0.

January Modules

The 6th Form sat a range of modules in January with a mixed degree of success. For some it was their first attempt at an A Level module and gave them an indication of the step up in expectation from GCSE. In the Upper 6th Harry Chamberlain achieved a clean sweep of A grades in all three modules and Thomas Heyes achieved full marks in a Maths module. In the lower 6th Fergus Bevens excelled with two A grades, Calum McCoss got a top grade in Biology as did George Smith in Politics. However, star of the show was Roy Shan who achieved 4 A grades in Maths, two full mark modules and only 10 dropped marks in the other 2. Well done to all.

Junior Football Success

The Junior football team were excellent in this week's inter house competition. They started off with a comfortable 1-0 win against Reid's and followed it up with a 2-0 win against Matheson's. The goals coming from Alberto Menendez and George Mackenzie Smith. Their then followed a close battle with Skrine's but a last minute goal from George Mackenzie Smith ensured a 2-1 victory. This set up a mouth-watering final match against Patchell's who had also won all their matches. Both teams made chances but managed to squander all of them. The best chance fell to Alberto Menendez with the last kick of the game but he screwed his effort wide. The match finished 0-0 so honours even.

Bye Bye Carol

The House said goodbye to Matron, Carol Grey, at the end of term and wishes her and her husband John all the best as they return to Newcastle. Carol has been a fantastic addition to Goodacre's and the boys will certainly miss her. Why aye man.

Academic Graft

Now that half term approaches and summer exams start to loom large it is great to see that Goodacre's has risen to the challenges ahead and produced a set of Form Orders which place it top of all the boys Houses. An average grade below 2 is superb and we will be looking to maintain this level of effort if we hope to outdo last year's U6th and 5th form GCSE scores.

Junior House Hockey

Despite a fabulous display of skill, teamwork and determination the Junior boys were just edged out of top spot in the Junior competition. Victories against Matheson's, Skrine's and Reid's were well deserved although we did leave it late against Matheson's with George Maclachlan scoring in the last minute to secure a 3-2 victory. The deciding game was against Patchell's who fielded two College first team players (one of whom was a Scotland International) but it was difficult to decide which team fielded the internationalist as Goodacre's took the game to Patchell's and forced a few short corners early on. The best move of the match culminated in Tim Webster standing 5 yards in front of an empty goal but he dragged his shot the wrong side of the post. Patchell's secured victory in the last few minutes with two goals from their international player somewhat against the run of play.

5th Form Dinner party

The 5th Form hosted a joint dinner party with Patchell's on Saturday night taking over the Conference Room to entertain young ladies from Carnies. The elaborate menu was created by the boys of Goodacre's and Patchell's and the afternoon was spent either in the kitchen preparing the dishes or in the conference room laying tables and decorating. The dinner was a huge success and was rounded off with a great movie night.

Steeplechase Success

It was great to see another 100% turn out from Goodacre's in the Steeplechase and there were some great performances throughout the year groups. Iain Knott, Fergus Bevens and George Smith led the way for the Seniors and Thomas Crosthwaite and Angus McCance led the Juniors home. The Seniors finished 2nd overall and the Juniors 3rd but the real success was the strength in depth with the all the Junior boys getting home well before any of the other Houses. The Seniors repeated this feat with the whole House being home almost 4 minutes before the next House had their runners back. House spirit thrives in Goodacre's and long may it continue.

House Swimming

This was the first time in possibly 10 years that the Goodacre's Housemaster did not get wet but this does not detract from some excellent swimming. Elliott Hardie powered home in the 50 metres freestyle and relay and the Junior boys had an electric win in the freestyle relay with Alberto Menendez turning in a fantastic 50 metres which took us from 4th to first. Michael Bodie stepped up to senior level and certainly did not look out of place. Thanks must go to Elliott Hardie and Archie Farquharson for putting together such a competitive squad.
