Mrs Sarah Sinclair, Housemistress

Lothian was the first girls' House at Glenalmond and was opened in 1990. I became Housemistress in 2005 having taught Mathematics at Glenalmond since 2001. There is a true family atmosphere within the House as I am joined by my husband Mark our two children Maisie and Jake, and dog Murphy.

Lothian girls have a wide variety of talents and interests and are willing to give anything a go - at least once! There is definitely a strong House spirit which keeps us all enthusiastic.

Lothian News Update, June

Good luck to Eily, Soffia and Sheila who have all applied to the Friends of Glenalmond for a travel award. They have had to prepare a presentation and we await the results soon!

Last Friday was the date for our annual Leaver's Dinner. This year we decided to go for a fantastic dinner in Perth and then go to the cinema. It was a wonderful night out with Rachel making an entertaining yet moving speech about the U6th's antics! Lettie then toasted Rachel's efforts as Head of House. It was a lovely opportunity to get together, to celebrate what a successful group the Lothian '10 girls are. Mrs Gower, Mrs Henderson joined Mr and Mrs Sinclair which made it even more special. The movie was SATC2 and it certainly was funny. Mr Sinclair even enjoyed it although he was the only male there!

The Juniors now sigh with relief as their end of term examinations are over. Tonight we had a lovely BBQ in the sunshine to celebrate and then to work off those ice creams we had few silly races. The relay race was a great success although the potato and spoon race just showed how much cheating was possible. The less said about the Three-legged race the better! Well done everyone on your hard work over the last few weeks and now it is time to get packing for the Third Form Activities Week with climbing, kayaking and expedition followed by the Fourth Form heading off on CCF camp.

It really is "All go" right through to the end of term.

Everyone returned very excited to begin the summer term and the weather has been great so we all got straight on with lots of Tennis, Athletics and sun-bathing.

The IIIrd form girls were delighted to begin the term and certainly didn't take their time in getting on with things. We welcomed a new girl, Kajsa and she settled in immediately. Jenny has already had huge success on the Tennis courts, making it to first couple, winning the Duncan Garrett Tournament and the Lothian and Home Tennis day. She has also been to the Midlands trails with Kirstin. On top of this, Kirstin took part in the Scottish Rounders trials and she came 3rd in the Singing Competition. Sarah has been incredibly busy this term and on top of all her usual sporting commitments, she managed to set the backstroke record in swimming.

One real highlight of this half of term has been the Junior play "The Wiz" which was a huge success. The majority of the junior girls were in it, with impressive performances from Molly as the evil, yet stylish, wicked witch, Beatrice as Aunt Em as well as Annabel, Rebecca, Anna and Morag as the rather intriguing poppies. Fenella, Katrine, Lily, Ailsa, showed confidence and real talent taking part in their first year here!  Annabel, Rosie, Tasha, Bethany and Fiona were also fantastic 'hoodies', Emerald City dancers and 'Winkies' which kept us all laughing. Thanks also to the hard work of the senior girls giving their time and assistance so well done to Iona Y, Anabel, Carla, Stella and Chelsea.

In their usual style, IVth form Lothian-ites certainly haven't sat still for long. This has been an almost frantic first half of term. On top of the Wiz, there has been plenty going on for the sporty side of life too. Annabel and Rebecca have taken part in the Scottish Rounders at U16 level. Rebecca and Anna have also been selected for the 1st couple in Tennis too! Recently Joanna was awarded Girl of the Match in rounders as well so it is looking good for future events. In Athletics there has been further success with Annabel winning the Junior Discus which certainly helped Lothian win the Inter House event just before half term. The musical side of life continues to be very strong in Lothian with Rosie passing her Grade 3 Theory, Molly coming 4th in the Singing Competition, Morag getting a distinction in her clarinet exam as well as Emma and Annabel playing with the Pipe Band on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade. Further performances at the Tattoo are assured I think!

The Lower Sixth Form have had their eyes firmly on examination preparation but there have been some notable achievements on top of the revision. Out of school, Lucy has been shooting for the Scotland team as well as completing the Balmoral 10K. In school: we were delighted to hear that she had been awarded full marks for her AS PE coursework, well done! The recent CCF inspection was very successful, helped undoubtedly by Lucy and Sarah taking part in the Guard of Honour. Tiffany was awarded a distinction in her Grade 8 organ exam at the same time as she has been on university visits to Oxford and Cambridge in preparation for her applications next year, so she certainly has been busy! Charlotte has been working very hard to complete her AS Art portfolio and this has been so successful that she has been commissioned to do a piece of work on dead pheasants – a particular interest she has been following! Also in an Art theme, congratulations go to Alison R who has won a prize in an Animal Aid Competition and has been invited to London to receive it. Tamsin B came 2nd in the Singing Competition recently but she has recently been unwell so we all wish her a speedy recovery! Well done to Emma M and Alison M who also competed. There is now great preparation underway for the examinations and then they are rewarded (!) with the Leadership Exercise which always brings a smile, for the staff at least!

On top of all this, a real achievement for 6th form has been the involvement in the Scottish Islands Peaks Race. Skye, Chelsea, Iona and Sarah have pounded the hills along with our very own Mrs Henderson over the past few weeks. This resulted in a gruelling event over some terrifying terrain. We are all very proud, so well done Ladies!

With a tear in our eyes, the Upper Sixth started their final term at Glenalmond. However, before we think about the end, some serious stuff has to take place. I am delighted with how hard they have ALL been working in preparation for these A2 examinations so I am confident of great things this summer. Lettie and Iona have achieved straight effort grade 1s so it does bode well. On top of the hard work of course there have been many other notable achievements: Eily turned 18, Soffia and Josie passed their driving tests and Karina achieved a high score on Tetris! Under the title of sporting success, thanks to Nessie for her co-ordination of the Athletics teams which of course led to our victory and well done to Rachel who made it to 1st couple in tennis for this final season. Kirsty Anna also played for the 1st Rounders team to great success. Carly continues to have a very impressive start in her first year as a professional golfer on top of some really great academic work, so well done for the balancing act!

This has been a really outstanding start to this final term of the year and I really can't wait to see what happens next!

A big well done is due to everyone who participated especially to IIIrd formers Sarah Peacock and Jenny Middleton. For the Steeple-chase, huge congratulations to Sheila who won overall and to Iona who came 3rd in the Senior race and to Flora Fergusson who came 1st in the Junior race.

Future Events: The Give Gig 2010

Don't forget, all tutor groups should now start to raise money for the Give Gig!  This week Mrs Gower's tutor group sold a large quantity of cakes- majority of which were homemade!  Also Mrs Davey's L6th tutor group sold ice cream in the theatre foyer. Keep up the good work!
