Creativity & Imagination

The creative arts are recognised as a valuable route to self-expression and personal development.

Art & Design, Music and Drama help to articulate character, build confidence and bring tremendous pleasure. The value we place on them is reflected in the provision of purpose-built Art and Music schools, and a 300-seat Theatre.

Art & Design

Our approach emphasises observational drawing as pic_tour-creativity-3an investigative tool and as a foundation for further study. Acquiring and understanding 'visual vocabulary' is vigorously pursued, in particular through the sketchbook. There are also frequent workshops with visiting artists and designers.

Drama

pic_tour-creativity-2Drama can play a huge role in developing teamwork and self-esteem. It is not just about acting: behind the scenes pupils work on set design and construction, stage management and lighting and sound. There are on average four productions a year and a number of these have recently played at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. We also organise regular trips to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee to take in the latest productions.

Music

From the Pipe Band, Orchestra and Jazz Band to string quartets, rock bands and rappers, music at Glenalmond takes in almost every genre.

Our tradition is Chapel-based, reflected today in our outstanding Chapel and Chamber Choirs. Over half of all pupils receive instrumental tuition, taught by a team of twenty specialists. Weekly lunchtime recitals, House concerts and larger public performances allow pupils at every level to perform in the Music School's handsome auditorium. Our renowned Pipe Bands perform at competitions and festivals in the UK and abroad.

With an advanced recording studio and software, Glenalmond is one of the few schools to offer a course in Music Technology.
