3rd Form Adventure Training

The "3rd Form Programme" is designed to give 3rd Form pupils the opportunity to develop personal life skills, teamwork skills and experience an introduction to outdoor pursuits. It also prepares pupils for the entry into the CCF which takes place at the end of the year.

The programme is delivered primarily through sessions which take place every Wednesday afternoon. The pupils work in small groups and undertake a different activity each week. Pupils are exposed to a wide range of activities: First Aid & Emergency Procedures, Group Management & Safety, Food & Cooking, Camp Craft, Equipment & Hygiene,  Canoeing, Climbing, Bushcraft, and Kayaking.

The pupils have the opportunity to put into practice what they have learned on the two Field Days (one in the Michaelmas term and the second in the Trinity term) and the Summer Camp.

For example, on a recent Field Day, the pupils spent a morning orienteering at the Knock in Crieff, followed by an afternoon in the “Adventure Zone” at Blue Sky Experiences. The Adventure Zone is Scotland’s most extensive Low Ropes facility. This custom-built test of trust and teamwork comprises 27 different challenges that can only be overcome with a team approach and a sense of humour!

The Summer Camp is the final part of the programme and this year took place at Ballater. The camp is run through the CCF and provides a chance for the pupils to immerse themselves for a week in adventurous training away from Coll, undertaking activities such as sailing, kayaking, rock climbing, orienteering and even a two-day unsupported expedition. Past camps have taken place at Machrihanish, and Culty Braggan and have been a rewarding experience for both pupils and staff.
