Conservation
Over the last few years pupils and staff have taken up the challenge of bringing the woodlands in the College grounds back into management, with the aims of improving their amenity value to the community and ensuring their long-term survival.
On North Slope access has been improved by building new paths, steps and bridges; damaged and invasive trees have been removed and new clearings have been created to encourage natural regeneration.
A tree nursery has been established and a lot of new planting of oak, ash, hazel and Douglas fir has taken place in the woods and along hedgerows.
The project to clear rampant Rhododendron and Gaultheria in Cairnies Wood is progressing well and the results are clearly visible to anyone visiting the golf course. Under-planting with Douglas fir and other species has started in those areas already cleared.
This work is of benefit to the wider community in the Glen as well as to College residents. It also allows pupils to learn a variety of new skills and they have the satisfaction of seeing the results of their labours for years to come.
