Housed in a purpose built set of class- and workrooms, the Design and Technology centre comprises a large MAC computer suite, two classrooms, a woodwork shop, metalwork shop, technician's office. In the centre of this building is a large open space used variously for coursework displays and as a construction area for larger projects. AS, A2 and GCSE D&T courses are taught by the Head of Department Alasdair Purdie together with Bill Bain, both assisted by technician Nick McNally. CDT projects range from small electronic component design and fabrication to quite large structures in wood and/or metal such as trailers, and hen coops. Coursework typically requires a pupil to present the background research for an idea, a survey of existing products, a rationale for designing and building, a plan for construction together with reasons for the choices of materials involved. |
