Academic Physical Education at Glenalmond College Girls Games at Glenalmond College

Glenalmond College now not only offers regular PE to all junior school years (2nd - 5th Form) but also Higher PE in the 6th form and GCSE PE starting in the 4th Form.

Higher PE is studied following the SQA board and is a very practically based course, which focuses on a variety of activities. Pupils have the opportunity here to be involved in the set of training programs, relating them to their own ability, learning and executing new skills and understanding concepts such as structures and strategies within a game. All work is based on their own experience and performance. Each pupil will also be assessed on their practical performance, which makes up 40% of the course marks. The remaining 60% is made up of the examination.

GCSE Physical Education is studied following the AQA Specification B and leading to a GCSE award. Candidates will be assessed in 4 physical activities, which must be selected from at least two of the following National Curriculum Areas of Activity: Athletic Activities, Games Activities, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities and Swimming and Water Safety. The practical activities are chosen by the school and will include all traditional activities/sports offered by the school (rugby, hockey, lacrosse, basketball, netball, cricket, athletics, tennis etc.) with swimming being a compulsory activity. The practical element of the course makes up 50% of the total marks.

Each candidate will be required to submit an analytical investigation based on one or more of the physical activities contained in the specification. The candidate is required to analyse and improve performance through the role of a coach, leader, official, organiser or performer. The Analytical Investigation of the course makes up 20% of total marks.

The final form of assessment is the terminal examination. One written paper will be divided into two sections, A and B. Section A is short answer questions and Section B is essay type questions. The examination element of the course makes up 30% of total marks.

Over the recent years the Girls Games at Glenalmond College have grown extensively. We offer a large variety within the games program that will not only provide competitive situations for team and individual sportswoman but also a physical activity to those who may not be sport inclined.

The sports and physical activities are divided amongst the three terms. In the Michaelmas Term (Sep-Dec) hockey is played as the girls' major sport. At present we run 8 teams who play fixtures against neighbouring schools, Edinburgh schools and schools as far as Gordonstoun.

During this term other physical activities are run as alternative options such as Netball, Lacrosse, Dance, Toning, Circuit Training, Swimming and Football and badminton.

During the Lent Term (Jan-Mar) the girl's major sport is Lacrosse, with Netball being a second run activity. Lacrosse takes place three times per week and Netball twice. Girls have the option between the two sports.

Other activities such as Toning, Circuits, Swimming, Fencing, Squash and Football (our newest sport) are offered on alternative days. Both Lacrosse and Netball have a full fixture set up, playing against neighbouring schools and Edinburgh Schools.

In the Trinity Term (Apr-July) the girl's major sport is Tennis whilst rounders is played as an activity. With a total of 22 Tennis courts there is opportunity for all girls to participate.

Coaching is offered not only by PE staff but also by an outside coach once per week. Football has come on a great deal and soon Glenalmond will be participating in the Independent Schools Football Tournament. Horse Riding may also be done externally during this term.

Our girls are also encourage to get involved in District Teams for their respective sports and in the past we have had representation at International Level. All girls are given the opportunity to participate no matter what their level of ability. We encourage girls to take part in an active lifestyle by trying to offer a variety of activities to suit their needs.
