Lothian House, Glenalmond College visit Eurobeat

Only three weeks into the Trinity Term and already so much has gone on!  The weather has (on the whole) been really kind and we have just had a fantastic sunny weekend.  On Saturday night, the whole of Lothian boarded two coaches to head for the Kings Theatre in Glasgow to see EUROBEAT – almost Eurovision.  This is a really cheesy, spoof version of the annual contest we all hate but have to watch and this show specialised in all the worst bits with style.  On arrival we were all given a badge showing which of the 10 countries we would have to support and then clappers and flags were purchased to really get into the spirit.  The show was great fun with some hysterical comedy dance routines and particularly bad singing making it all the more amusing.  Everyone had a great time and a big thank you has to go to everyone who made it a really enjoyable, smooth trip.

Earlier in the week, Lothian girls had a number of successes worth mentioning.  Catie G, Kirsty N, Olivia J and Alice O all took part in the Midlands Hockey and were all selected!  They are now part of the training squad and will continue to attend sessions until the next round of selection.

Thursday was also a particularly significant day as our very own Charlotte B in U6th successful completed a sponsored silence for 24 hours raising around £180 for the Give Gig 2008.  Everyone has been working hard to raise money for the worthy causes.

On Friday, Tiffany V, Meta G, Patricia W, Holly S, Tamsin McG, Caitlin S, Rachael D-N, Tamsin B and Rose McC all competed in the Singing Prize!  The results were outstanding with Lothian girls taking a large number of placings. In the Junior Competition, Patricia W took first, Meta G second and Tiffany V was placed third.  The Senior Prize was just as much a Lothian success with Catie G taking first with Tamsin B and Rose McC in second.  Well done to everyone!

Over the Easter holidays, we were delighted to hear that Sally W, our own fantastic Head of House, has received 3 highly sort after offers of a place to study Medicine at Leeds, Cardiff and Aberdeen.  We never doubted that she would be successful but it is great news to have it confirmed!

The first few weeks of term have been particularly busy for our horse riders too.  The previous weekend Alice C and Annabel T competed in the Inter Schools Competition at Gleneagles and Alice came 3rd in her arena in Dressage.  Just this past weekend, Alice C and Olivia P also took part in the Brechin Castle One Day Event.  Alice was 3rd after the dressage and Olivia had a great day coming 25th out of 42!  These are all really impressive results and we look forward to hearing how the event at Scone goes this weekend.

Inter House Skiing Competition by Lisa Ritchie

This year for the first time ever we had an Inter House Skiing Competition at 'Exscape', an indoor ski dome in Glasgow, which was a great idea to get more people involved in skiing.

The Lothian team consisted of; Lisa Ritchie, Ann-Sophie Von Moreau, Pia Froelichsthal and Izzy Anderson. As many people were otherwise occupied with different activities we were unable to have the suggested two teams of 3 so we entered one team of 4.

The competition consisted of two runs of a slalom course for individual times followed by parallel slalom which was a relay against another houses. This was more competitive, but also good fun.

Lothian were up against Skrine’s A team. This was a good race. We were just ahead of Skrine’s, but unfortunately one of our team members missed out a gate at the end, causing us to be disqualified!

Despite this it was a great afternoon out, and we are looking forward to beating Skrine’s next year!

Thank you to all the members of the team and also to the staff.

Lothian House Extravaganza

On the evening of Saturday 10th November Lothian descended on the music school in a purple wave of song, artwork and comedy. “It was by far the best Extravaganza I’ve ever been to,” said one delighted audience member. Parents and staff alike were enchanted by an assortment of performances including piping, a pop quiz and a trip ‘down in the jungle’ with the lower 6th.  We proved ourselves to be an incredibly tuneful house with fantastic performances from the 2nd, 3rd and 5th form…showing that we certainly deserved to win the house Partsong and the chapel ‘Pavarotti cup’! The upper 6th had the audience in stitches with their own hilarious video and it was a great way to end a wonderful evening’s entertainment. The audience was then treated to drinks and nibbles which were prepared by Rosanna McCallum as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Award.  We were very lucky to have the programme designed by Fearn Sandison and the hall was decorated by numerous works of art by Lothian-ites.  Thank-you to everybody for working so hard to make it such an enjoyable evening!

Lothian Dinner at Glenalmond College Perth Scotland

Vth Form Lothian’s Dinner Party with Reid’s and Patchell’s

On Saturday 29th September, Vth form Lothian hosted a dinner party for Reid’s and Patchell’s Vth form.  As it was the night of the Scotland vs Italy match in the Rugby World Cup, we decided to have a rugby themed supper to please the boys!

The boys arrived at 8 o’clock and we all greeted them by wearing rugby shirts but we were surprised to see none of them wearing rugby shirts!

We then sat down for our delicious dinner which our tutors, Mr and Mrs Hamilton and Alice, kindly made for us.  Overall it was a great night and Scotland beating Italy 18 – 16 topped off our Rugby themed dinner.

Thank you so much, Mrs Sinclair and the Hamiltons, for organising such a great evening!

Lothian House Outing 9th September 2007

For the house outing this year, we travelled to the legendary outdoor centre called Blue Sky Adventures. We were divided into different teams, with a mixture of year groups and personalities.

Then with the lovely helmets and extremely flattering harnesses, we carried out a range of team building activities along an obstacle course. Some of the activities included climbing through a tunnel under the ground, crawling along rope and everyones' favourite, making a tower of crates.

Patricia Walker aka Wizz and Eleanor Hoyer Miller managed the maximum amount of crates despite being so high off the ground, climbing on the very unstable tower. At the end of the day, the points were all added together and bronze, silver and gold medals were awarded to the teams who had received the highest marks.

Sadly my team won no medals but the bronze was won by Mrs Gillespie’s team, silver was won by the team captained by Mrs Sinclair, our very own housemistress and the golden team of the day was led by Dr Hamilton a Vth form tutor. Well done guys! A big thank you to all the teachers who gave up their Sunday to make ours a better one!

Scottish Youth Theatre!

During the summer I participated in a two week residential Drama course in Glasgow with the Scottish Youth Theatre (SYT).

We rehearsed from 9.20am to 4pm every day in the newly built SYT building and even on the last few days we stayed until 9pm so we could make sure that the show was ready. The rehearsals were hard and really tiring but it was great fun to act and write your own material before seeing it all come together. After rehearsals each night, we stayed in the John Melville Campus in Strathclyde University where we could relax and make new friends.

We performed the show in Glasgow’s Old Tramway Theatre and it was a great success, filled with music, drama and movement. It was based on characters from Dr Seuss.

I really enjoyed the SYT experience and made some great friends. It was an amazing experience and I hope that I can do it again soon!
