A group of Glenalmond Fourth Form pupils have recently returned from a successful sailing trip with Ocean Youth Trust Scotland.
The crew of eight girls and three boys, accompanied by Mr Hughes and Mr Smith, sailed a category zero, round-the-world racing yacht some 300 miles in 7 days between Oban and Greenock.
Highlights of the trip included a trip to Tobermory, a full circumnavigation of the Isle of Mull, getting up close to Fingal’s Cave on Staffa, mooring up for a night on Colonsay, seeing Minke whales and dropping Mr Smith over the side (on purpose) not once but twice!
The crew battled force 6-7 winds and huge Atlantic swells, as well as enjoying days of light winds with unbroken sunshine. They all took part in cooking and cleaning for the 18 people on board as well as maintaining a watch system through the day and night. At the end of the week, the Skipper presented each of them with their RYA Competent Crew certificates, an internationally recognised sailing qualification.
