Grieg's Piano Concerto

Last Thursday's Lunchtime Concert was an unusual occasion in that it featured just one pupil and one piece.

However that one piece was Grieg's mighty Piano Concerto, performed in its entirety by Durness M-C (Goodacre's). This was a real treat and left our fine new Yamaha C7X grand piano rocking on its springs, while Dr Ridley's 'orchestral' backing was consigned to another Yamaha, albeit this one a mere S90XS electric keyboard.

Durness' achievement in mastering one of the great technical war-horses of the concerto repertoire is not to be underestimated – this was a quite remarkable feat, leaving a large audience spellbound and at times awed.

Durness is preparing the concerto for a competition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Based on Thursday's account he heads to Glasgow in a very strong position and with our very best wishes.
