Hat trick for Sophie Illingworth

A new fixture for the season and an exciting game from start to finish.  Breaks were fast and furious by both teams and the midfield must have felt no dissimilar to a yoyo, being coiled and uncoiled as the ball went from end to end.   Sophie Illingworth was on flying form up front and managed to score a well deserved hat trick, always being in the right place at the right time & taking advantage of the opposition's occasional lapses in concentration. It was a wonderful display of team work and it showed how well the squad work as a unit.

An excellent performance.

U/15A 3  QVS  0
Goals Louisa MacDonald 2, Chelsea Frew 1

The girls dominated the game for most of the match and had several opportunities to score.  The passing and team play in the circle was particularly good.  Louisa scored the only goal in the first half and therefore the half time score was 1-0 to Glenalmond.  After half time the girls went ahead with another goal.  The final touch unknown, but given to Louisa.  The last goal of the match was scored by Chelsea; it was a beautifully struck shot from the top of the circle and a very satisfying way to end a match.

Well done to the girls for playing some encouraging hockey and special mention should go to Chelsea Frew for being the player of the match.

The 2nd XI

2nd XI 5 QVS 0
Goals:Jess Darnley 3, Lisa Ritchie 2

The hockey season is now close to its end and with this in mind the girls took on our 3rd last match with a palpable goal-hunger. Our defense were psyched up not to let any play by them and our attack was ready to score goals.  During the first half Jess scored two quick goals and after that we experienced a bit of a dip and we found ourselves in our defending half for the last 10 minutes before half time.

At half time we set ourselves the goal not to let our opponents enter our half and therefore try and break down their play earlier and to also put on some more pressure on their defense.  During the second half of the match, exactly this was achieved and Jess then scored her 3rd goal.  Lisa then scored the last two goals of the match.

The passing and team play were exceptional and I would like to congratulate the girls on that!  Special mention goes to Jess Darnley, currently the top scorer of the season, for scoring a hat-trick and also for being the player of the match.

2nd XI 1 - Fettes 2
Goal: Lisa Ritchie

This match was by far the most frustrating one of the season.  We were so well prepared and psyched up for the match and although we were immediately on the attack and had most of the ball possession, things just weren’t going our way.

Fettes had an easy opportunity in the first have to score and they utilized it.  The half time score was 1-0 and about 5 minutes into the second half Fettes scored again.  Our girls played fantastic hockey and fought very hard and a bit of our frustration was relieved when Lisa Ritchie scored a goal for us.  We spent the rest of the match in the Fettes half, but we just couldn’t find the box.

A frustrating, but hard fought match with some fantastic hockey.  Well done to each girl for giving her all and congratulations to Lisa Ritchie for being the player of the match.

2nd XI 3 - Dundee High School 0
Goals  Lydia Nicol 2, Caroline Currie 1

It was evident that we were the stronger team, right from the first push back.  During the fist half we struggled a bit to play at our standard and we also lost Jess due to injury.  The second half was completely the opposite though.  We were playing brilliant supportive hockey and our passing was spot on.  Lydia Nicol scored our first goal and then Caroline Currie scored a superb second goal for the team.  Just before full time, we were awarded with a short corner and with no time left, Lydia scored the last goal of the match.

Well done to the girls and congratulations to Lydia Nicol for being the player of the match.

1stXI 2 - Strathallan 2

It shouldn’t be but a home game has a distinct psychological advantage and we made the most of it in yet another outstanding performance by the squad.  The game was intense from the start and the play was fairly even for the first half.  The more the season progresses the more we see the team become a unit and work efficiently as one.  Linking play was some of the best we have seen yet and we had the confidence to switch the play from one side to the other, giving us more options.  Our attack was as rapid as ever and made Strathallan feel under pressure in their defensive half.  We made the most of our attacks and the midfield, with particular mention to Hannah Preston, worked tirelessly throughout.
A thoroughly deserving result and a great end to the first half of the season.
Congratulations, you deserve it!

1stXI 1 - George Watson’s 6

This was a tough match from start to finish but Glenalmond stepped up the pressure when it was needed.  It was a fairly even game until half-time and we had some excellent play, particularly with between our midfield and forwards.  George Watson’s were fast onto the ball and passed the ball around at a pace we are not used to but we reacted and were able to put pressure on them.  Our defence were outstanding and deserve a special mention; they were put under particular pressure and were constant in their battling.  The score line does not indicate the level of play Glenalmond had.  A fine performance by the whole team.
Player of the match was The whole team!

2nd XI 4 - Loretto 3
Goals: Jess Darnley 2, Lisa Ritchie 1, Amelia Conley 1

The first half of the match was disappointing as we played at a much lower level than we are capable of, mostly due to not warming up properly.  Loretto had a few break-through situations in which our backs had to work very hard to defend.  Our girls scored first, but two of Loretto’s break-throughs each resulted in a goal, making the half time score 2-1 to the visitors.

After half time our girls were fired up to perform at a much higher level.  We were on the attack, enjoyed most of the ball possession, created our own play, but most of all the desire to win ensured that each player gave her total effort.  With a lot of pressure being placed upon the Loretto defence, we soon scored three quick and much deserved goals.  Loretto then came back and scored one more goal just before the end of the match.

Well done to the girls and congratulations to Amelia Conley and Rachel Clark for being the players of the match.

2nd XI 2 Strathallan 0
Lottie Cameron 1 Caroline Currie 1

The 2nd XI Strathallan this weekend.  This was the match that we have all been waiting for.  Playing against Strath always results in excellent hockey from both sides and this Saturday was no different.  First of all, it was great to see the game played in such good spirit and secondly the level of hockey that was played at second team level was admirable.  Judging by the feedback from supporters it certainly was a pleasure to watch.

In the first half our girls had most of the possession and we found ourselves in the attacking half most of the time.  This soon resulted in a goal by Lottie to put us in the lead.  The half time score was 1-0 to us and we knew that a second goal was what we needed to claim this match.

Strath put some pressure on us during the second half, but after about ten minutes we broke their play down and we were on the attack again.  We worked very hard in the attacking circle and this payed off when Caroline scored our second goal.  We had a few more opportunities to score after this, but we were very happy with the final result!

Very well done to the girls and congratulations to Lily Brown for being the player of the match.

Glenalmond U15B XI 2, Strathallan 0
Pat Stronskyte- 2

The Glenalmond Girls’ U15B squad was in top form on Saturday in their 2-0 win over Strathallan.  Coll dominated possession in the first half, allowing Pat Stronskyte to convert an early goal, the squad’s first since their match against Loretto.  Strath came out strongly in the second half and made a run for the lead, but solid defensive plays combined with another Stronskyte goal late in the match kept the opposition at bay.

Coll showed significant improvement on both sides of the ball on Saturday and we hope to build upon that throughout the rest of the term.  Well done to Glenalmond for a particularly sweet victory against a tough rival!

Player of the match was Pat Stronskyte.

2nd XI vs George Watson’s:  2-2
Jess Darnley 1, Lottie Cameron 1

On Saturday, 6 October, the 2nd XI girls played against George Watson’s.  We knew that we were going to have a tough match on our hands, but the girls courageously took it on.

The first half was very tense and George Watson’s managed to score two goals.  At half time the score still was 2-0 to George Watson’s and we needed to pick ourselves up and put the pressure on the opposition’s defense.  In the second half we did exactly that and the girls played absolutely brilliant hockey, after realizing that they are the better team on the pitch.

With the amount of pressure that we placed upon George Watson’s defense, we managed to score one goal by Jess followed by another by Lottie.  With one minute left of the game, George Watson’s received a short corner against us.  Nerves were running high, but the girls stayed composed and cleared the ball off the sideline.  That was the end of a superbly fought match that showed a lot of character by our girls.

Congratulations girls and well done to Caroline Currie for being the player of the match.

2nd XI 4 v Dollar 1

Jess Darnley 2, Lottie Cameron 1 and Amelia Conley 1

On Tuesday, 2 October, the 2nd XI girls played against Dollar. Our girls were physically and mentally very well prepared for the match and from the pushback we were on the attack showing excellent team play. Within ten minutes we scored the first goal and with the half time score being 2-1 we knew that the match was far from over.

The second half proved to be even better than the first and we managed to score two more goals, ensuring a convincing win. Well done to the team for playing excellent hockey! This was certainly the best performance versus Dollar in comparison with the last four years!

Special mention should go to Lottie Cameron for being the player of the match and to Jess Darnley for scoring two goals out of the four.

U15B 0 - Dollar Academy 1

The U15B squad put up a good fight in a very physical match on Tuesday, but their effort was not strong enough for a win this time. Several defensive lapses by the Coll gave the Dollar squad many scoring opportunities, all but one of which were squashed by goalkeeper Caroline Bullen.

Glenalmond also struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities of their own. Despite not earning the outcome they had wished for, the U15B girls remained hardworking and spirited throughout the match. The loss was a learning experience for us all as we were able to see the things we have to work on throughout the season.

We are optimistic about a better result against George Watson’s this Saturday!

Player of the match was Caroline Bullen.

Midlands Tournament

Vs Kilgraston Won 1-0 (Rose Eden)
Vs Dundee High Won 1-0 (Emily Hunter)
Vs Madras Drew 0-0
Vs Morrisons Won 1-0 (Gemma Sole)

Semi-finals vs Strathallan Lost on Flicks

It was a fairly chaotic start with half of the team running across from Midlands Lacrosse Trials. We were up against Kilgraston in our first game and managed to control the game from start to finish. With some lovely linking play between the defence and the midfield our opportunities to score were numerous but one goal was sufficient.

The next three games provided different challenges but the efforts of the team and the determination to end up on top was admirable. We ended up winners of our section and played Strathallan, as runners up of the other section, in the semi-final.

It was a frantic game and on numerous occasions both teams had some quick breaks. The midfield worked tirelessly and deserve a particular mention. By full time the score was 0-0 and so to extra time and penalty flicks. We have had no practice this season with flicks but after selecting our chosen five, the rest of the team waited anxiously on the half-way line.

Charlie Loudon, our Goal Keeper, did a wonderful job and managed to save one goal. Unfortunately Strathallan just managed to squeeze an extra one in and earn a place in the final.

An outstanding performance by the whole team and particular mention should go to Charlie Loudon and Lisa Ritchie who joined the team for the Tournament.

Player of the Tournament was: The Whole Team!

U14B 6 - Loretto 0

The U/14 B squad played a fantastic match against Loretto on Saturday. From the warm up our girls were ready and eager to compete and only five minutes into the game we scored our first goal. The girls played really well as a team and that combined with good skill we overpowered Loretto and won the game 6-0.

The team captain was Rosina Findlay and a special mention should go to Molly Brocklehurst for unanimously being voted as the player of the match. Congratulations to the team for a great performance.

U15B 3 - Loretto 0
Pat Stronskyte -1, Annabel Blackett -1, Lisa Robertson -1

Although the U15B squad was thrown a curveball when Loretto only brought 8 players to the match, forcing us to rearrange the starting lineup, our ever-cheerful bunch kept their spirits high and remained focused to produce a convincing 3-0 win on Saturday.

Despite showing early indications of first-match jitters as we were unable to convert several scoring opportunities, Coll received a boost of confidence from Pat Stronskyte’s goal midway through the first half. Annabel Blackett and Lisa Robertson scored one each in the second half, making the win a true team effort with three goals scored by three different players.

Not only was our defense impenetrable on Saturday, but it proved to have particularly strong hitters as several of our defenders hit the ball over the end line from nearly the halfway line in the second half! Overall, a great first performance by the Coll, both offensively and defensively.

Player of the match was Chelsea-Mari Guemar.

1stXI vs Gordonstoun Away Won 3-1
Gemma Sole - 2, Emily Hunter - 1

The long journey up to Gordonstoun is always something that the girls look forward to; a mini adventure (forget about the fact that they have a lesson free Saturday). We stumbled off the bus and slowly woke ourselves up, only this time we had the rain to greet us.

Usually we are fairly slow to get into the game on away fixtures and the opposition can often catch us off guard. Today we were not. It is rare that I have seen a team perform so well, so early on in the season.

The first half was exciting hockey to watch; it was as if we had been playing together already for the whole season. Our speed up front was catching the opposition off guard and by half-time we were 3-0 up. To their credit, Gordonstoun came back at us in the second half and, at times, took control of the game but our solid defence and observant midfield kept us calm and kept on feeding the ball to the forwards.

Player of the Match was Mahiri Laughland.

1stXI vs St.George’s Away 1-1
Emily Hunter - 1

Pre-season had gone really well. We had a number of last years players still in the squad and a couple of new, lively fifth formers added to the squad. I had been impressed with their energy and determination at pre-season and knew that this season could see the start of a different Glenalmond side; in the sense that there was a new raw hunger (and determination) for success in the side.

The St.George’s fixture had been cancelled last year, so I had no idea what to expect of them. They are both physically and skilfully strong and they were a wonderful test of how we could cope under pressure, so early on in the season. Defence was solid and calm under pressure and with our Captain, Sally Wright and Vice-Captain, Holly Stoker in charge we played our game well. At half-time it was 0-0 and neither side was prepared for a draw.

Both teams stepped it up in the second half and a wonderful finish by Emily Hunter gave us our first goal and her first goal in senior hockey. St.George’s came back and unfortunately scored within the next two minutes and the game finished on that 1-1 score. A really exciting start to the season.

Player of the match was Catherine Nicol.
