World’s Biggest Curry Lunch

Staff and pupils responded to a request to participate in the World’s Biggest Curry Lunch promoted by the Army Benevolent Fund.  Entering into the spirit of this mass simultaneous curry, members of the College made donations to the Fund for the privilege of enjoying a day out of school dress and to “Dress Easy with a Hint of Spice”.

The Catering Manager and Head Chef put on a Sri Lankan chicken curry together with lots of Indian accompaniments and condiments for the occasion.

Healthy Living at Glenalmond College

The catering team at Glenalmond College has been working hard for many years to provide healthy meal choices for us, their customers, and have now had their efforts recognised. They have been awarded the Healthyliving award, which is sponsored by the Scottish Consumer Council and the Scottish Executive.

The aims of the award are to provide healthier meal choices and in particular to reduce salt, sugar and fat across the menu,  to make fruit and vegetables clearly available and to make starchy foods the main part of most meals.

Tony Abbott the Catering Manager said "It has taken us a full year to achieve all the criteria of the award which has involved considerable staff time and training. However, our customers have responded very positively and now enjoy having healthier meal options clearly labelled and we are actively promoting healthier living to our customers, students and teachers alike”.

Serving around 1,300 covers daily Tony's team of caterers do more than just serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. They run all the catering for the numerous events hosted by Coll, including this weekend's Prep Schools' Choral Day, on Sunday October 15th. They deliver barbeque services in summer, drinks occasions after major drama or music productions, and packed lunches for pupils engaged in outdoor activities when they would otherwise miss a main meal.

The statistics can becoming overwhelming; for example the consumption of that well known item, tomato ketchup, is measured in gallons per day and ingredients purchases run at around £10,000 per week!
