Chapel is central to Glenalmond life.....

We meet for worship every day apart from Saturday and this emphasis on Christian living and belief underpins a great deal of what happens in College.

This said, Chapel is not only about Christian formation it is also a time for the community to come together each day, and the services often take different forms depending on the day of the week and the needs of the college at any time. Mondays, for example, are normally talks with a moral or spiritual theme given by a member of staff, Thursdays normally focus on Congregational singing practice.

The Chaplain also respects the beliefs and approaches of those who have another faith or none, and whilst all pupils are invited to share in Christian faith, they should not feel compelled to do so.

Pupils of all Christian denominations are represented within the school, and communion is offered to everybody who normally receives within their own tradition. Communion services normally take place three or four times a term.

Confirmation is offered within the school for both Episcopalian (Anglican) and Church of Scotland (other Protestant and Presbyterian denominations also included) pupils. It is normally offered to pupils in the fifth form and above, though exceptions can be made for various reasons.

Sunday services are an important part of our corporate life together and are compulsory, except for day pupils who are required to attend only a few services each term. These services vary between Eucharist/Communion, Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer.

The Chaplain also offers an informal group called Soul Space which meets on a Tuesday afternoon for faith and fellowship. Normally this involves tea and cake at the Chaplain’s House, followed by a short bible study and discussion and ending with prayer and a few worship songs. This is for all age groups and faith backgrounds.

Wednesday Compline (Night Prayer) is also part of the spiritual heartbeat of the community. Compline takes place after Prep on a Wednesday and pupils are invited to light a candle for someone they are praying for or are concerned about.

The Chaplain also organises Community Service which sends twenty-five pupils to various community placements each Wednesday afternoon from Residential Homes for the Elderly or local Primary Schools to a local farm for people with learning disabilities.

Fundraising for charitable causes is also an important part of chapel life with three charities (Scottish, British and International) being supported each term. Thousands of pounds are raised each term for numerous charities with over £17,000 being raised last year alone.

The Chaplain’s role is one of responsibility for the worshipping life of the community, but it also encompasses pastoral care for the whole community and much else besides. If you would like to contact me about any aspect regarding the Christian, pastoral or religious nature of the school, please do no hesitate in contacting me. The Sacraments
The Eucharist is celebrated every Sunday in term-time.  Christians of any denomination who would normally receive Communion in their own church are invited to receive Holy Communion in Chapel.  Members of the College are prepared for Confirmation (in the Scottish Episcopal Church, the Church of Scotland and associated Churches; Roman Catholic pupils may also be prepared by arrangement), usually in Fifth Form.  Baptism, the Sacrament of Reconciliation (commonly called Confession) and the Anointing of the Sick are available following consultation with the Chaplain.  Outwith term-time, Chapel can be available for Weddings – please contact the Bursar’s Office for more information.
