Glenalmond College Summer School

An English lesson, a game with new friends, a journey into the hills, the coast or the city. At Glenalmond, your summer takes you well beyond the classroom.

Our programme combines structured English teaching with sport, outdoor activities, excursions and evenings together. You will have plenty of reasons to start a conversation, try something new and grow in confidence.

It is a holiday to enjoy in its own right, and a chance to discover life in the most special of British boarding schools.

A little Glenalmond magic

Grand stone buildings, atmospheric quadrangles and 300 acres of Perthshire countryside. Glenalmond is a place with room to explore and a storybook feel. Our school was modelled on the grand colleges of Oxford and Cambridge universities and maintains a special feel for all who visit.

Harry Potter fans will recognise a little of that magic. There is a real connection, too: Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid in the films, was a pupil here.

For two weeks, this remarkable setting becomes your home. You will find your way around campus, meet new people and begin a school adventure of your own.

English for real life

Whether it be introducing yourself, asking a question on a trip, buying something from a farmer’s market, or sharing an idea with your team, speaking English becomes more natural when you have something you want to say.

The Glenalmond Summer School gives you so many opportunities to use the language skills you have already learned, and to build up your confidence and vocabulary to speak freely with everyone you meet.

Dedicated English sessions help you practise speaking, listening, reading and writing. Lessons connect with your experiences at Glenalmond: preparing questions for a visit, discussing an activity or describing somewhere you have explored.

Then you put that learning into practice. Around the dining table, during games and in conversations with friends from other countries, English becomes part of everyday life.

Room to play. Space to explore.

Make the most of a summer outdoors, with a selection of sports and adventures suited to your group and course programme.

On campus, facilities include a swimming pool, sports hall, two gyms, hockey pitches, tennis and squash courts, a nine-hole golf course and an indoor golf simulator. There is plenty of scope to enjoy a favourite sport or discover a new one.

Beyond the playing fields, the outdoor programme draws on Scotland’s landscape. Activities may include:

  • Mountaineering and hillwalking
  • Kayaking
  • Archery
  • River fishing

With instruction and supervision suited to the group, you will have opportunities to take on new challenges, support your friends and discover what you can do.

Scotland is part of the adventure

Historic streets, lively cities, wildlife and open countryside. Excursions introduce you to different sides of Scotland, with new experiences to speak English and practice reading the language along the way.

The programme includes a selection of visits to some of these places:

  • Edinburgh — discover Scotland’s capital, its dramatic castle, the Royal Mile and museums.
  • St Andrews — explore historic streets, a coastal setting and beaches.
  • Stirling — uncover stories of Scotland through castles, monuments and museums.
  • Glasgow — experience a lively city with museums and football heritage.
  • Pitlochry and the surrounding countryside — enjoy Perthshire scenery and outdoor experiences.
  • Blair Drummond Safari Park — discover animals from around the world and learn about conservation.

Activities and excursions vary by course, group and local conditions. You will have the opportunity to input on the activities chosen for each course. Your course information will confirm the programme for your stay and any participation requirements.

Your home for the summer

From your first welcome to your final evening, boarding life is part of the experience. You will stay in the College’s boarding houses, with time to settle in, get to know the team and find your feet.

Your boarding house is a smaller community within the Summer School: somewhere to relax, talk and feel part of the group. Shared meals bring everyone together to compare the day’s adventures and plan what comes next.

Pupils will know who to turn to for help. Our team will explain residential support, welfare and medical arrangements, and how families can keep in touch.

Evenings you’ll remember

There is still plenty to look forward to when lessons and activities finish. The evening programme offers a selection of house activities, film nights, friendly competitions, a disco and a barbecue with games. A leaving party and camp awards celebrate the end of your stay.

It is time to share a joke, use new words and find out what you have in common. Some of the best memories begin with a conversation.

What will your days look like?

Campus days combine English sessions, activities, shared meals and an evening programme. Excursion days take you further afield to explore Scotland together.
