OG Rory McCleery (Skrine's, 00-04) and his choral ensemble The Marian Consort are enjoying huge success this Christmas season.
No doubt riding on the back of their stunning performance here at Coll this time last year, their latest CD recording of Lennox Berkeley’s Stabat Mater has been listed as one of The Times/Sunday Times Top Ten Contemporary Classical and Top 100 recordings of 2016. They have also been cited as one of MusicWeb’s International Recordings of the Year 2016.
"Commissioned by Britten as a touring 'companion' piece to the first performances of The Rape of Lucretia in 1948, Stabat Mater shows Lennox Berkeley at his most beguilingly austere, with quasi-medieval vocal writing — Rory McCleery’s alto solo is outstanding — fastidiously embroidered by chamber ensemble. His a cappella Mass and Judica Me are followed by a beautiful piece for soprano, alto and string quintet, written for a wedding by his son, Michael." Sunday Times
"You are left in no doubt of the agony of the crucifixion in the vocal and horn climax of the opening chorus of Stabat Mater … intense and riveting." MusicWeb
Many congratulations to Rory and The Marian Consort and good luck with your sold out Christmas Oratorio performance in Edinburgh on 20 December – all at Glenalmond are very proud of your success.
