OGs compete in qualifiers for the 148th Open Championship
On Monday 24 June, more than 1,000 golfers will battled it out for a spot at Final Qualifying, which could go on to earn them a spot at the 148th Open. Across 13 venues, professionals and amateurs with a handicap of scratch or better played one round of golf in hope of advancing to the next stage of qualifying in July.
Of those 1,000 golfers, two of them were recent OGs, Will Porter (11-16, Patchell's) and Tom Simmonds (07-13, Skrine's), who were both attempting to progress yesterday at Panmure Golf Club.
They came very close indeed. Will's score of 73 was good enough to put him in 11th position on the day and in the 3rd reserve spot, but one spot off automatic qualifying. Tom's scoe of 75 was good enough for T20, but sadly not in the reserve spots.
Conditions on the day were awful, so their scores of 73 and 75 were very good, especially as the leading score was only a level par 70. The top 10, with scores of 72 or better all progressed to final qualifying.
Very well done to Will and Tom and we wish them all the best as they continue their golfing careers.
