Glenalmond College Hosts 500 Children for Summer Sports

Around 500 children from across Tayside and further afield have enjoyed taking part in a range of sporting and other activities in recent weeks, hosted in the stunning setting of Glenalmond College.

As well as our own hockey performance camps and language school, we have also hosted the Scottish Episcopal Church’s Youth Week which has been running for about 20 years at Glenalmond.

Among the other organisations which we have welcomed to its Perthshire home during the summer holidays so far are Sheppard Swim School, Scottish Hockey and Tayview Activities. The Tayview Activities summer camps for five to 15 year olds are led by Susan Whiteford who has been running successful camps at Glenalmond for over 15 years.

Children, from Perthshire, Fife and Angus, have been making the most of the summer sunshine during three weeks of Tayview Activities' camps at Glenalmond and taking part in sports ranging from tennis, hockey and rounders to swimming, basketball and archery.

Our Warden, Hugh Ouston, said he was delighted to welcome Tayview Activities, along with all the other organisations running activities at the College over the summer months.

“We make the most of our stunning 300 acres of grounds as an educational resource for our own Glenalmond pupils, so it is very rewarding to see young people from throughout Tayside enjoying sports and other activities which make the most of our facilities and our setting.”

Susan Whiteford of Tayview Activities said: “It is great to see the children having the confidence to take part in sports they have never tried before as well as developing leadership skills. Equally important, however, are the social skills the children learn and many new friendships are made during the camps. Glenalmond offers a fantastic setting for the camps as well as excellent facilities. The older children also get an opportunity to try some less well-known sports such as kayaking in the school swimming pool.”

As well as welcoming children to the sports camps hosted in its grounds, the College team is also preparing to welcome London Scottish to the school in the coming weeks as part of its partnership with the famous rugby club. Glenalmond was recently announced as the official School Partner of London Scottish and its first XV squad will be basing themselves at Glenalmond where they will prepare themselves for their pre-season fixture with Edinburgh at Murrayfield.

We also have a nine hole golf course and are undertaking an exciting programme of investment in our golf facilities in the coming months. Read more about golf at Glenalmond
