Glenalmond Cricket Sixes

U11 and U13 Cricket Sixes Tournaments Take Place at Glenalmond College

Despite a very wet start to the day with the rain hammering down at 0700, knowing how excited all the players were for the tournament to go ahead we trusted the forecast, held our nerve and kept the two tournaments on. By 1030am the Glenalmond Grounds were bathed in sunshine and although the pitches were a little wet early on this did not deter any of the coaches, players or spectators and we commenced a wonderful day of cricket. Teams from Arbroath CC, Kinross CC, St Mary's, Belhaven Hill, Cargilfield, Craigclowan, Ardvreck and Loretto gave us two full competitions, one at U13 and one at U11.

As the day warmed so did the cricket and in the group stages many of the matches were so close that calculating who progressed to the knockout stages required some close scrutiny of wickets lost and run rates. However, in the final stages of the U11 contest Ardvreck took on Cargilfield for the trophy and gold medals whilst Belhaven and Loretto battled it out for 3rd/4th positions. Whilst Belhaven took the honours on the last ball of their match to take 3rd place, Cargilfield sealed a magnificent win with a fine display of sweep and pull shots from their opening batsmen, securing 4 boundaries in consecutive balls to win the trophy.

In the U13 competition, Loretto defeated St Mary's in an exciting encounter to take 3rd place overall whilst the main final saw Belhaven chasing a good total which had been set by Ardvreck who miraculously managed to run 5 on the last ball of their innings. As Belhaven took on the challenge the game ebbed and flowed with the teams trading wickets and boundaries. The scene was set for a thrilling finish in the evening sun and so it was, 24 runs required from the last 12 balls which then filtered down to Belhaven requiring 2 runs off the last ball of the match. With the batsmen sweeping the final delivery towards the leg side boundary and a scurry for the 2 runs, the Ardvreck fielder made a valiant effort to dive and deny Belhaven the boundary but the ball slipped over the rope and the victory was Belhaven's.

Thank you to all the players who entertained the parents and supporters, numbering well over 250, so well throughout the afternoon across all 4 pitches.  Everyone left smiling and possibly a little sunburnt and it is absolutely true to say that we all look forward to more exciting Cricket Sixes at next year's event.
