Matheson's has the reputation of being a small friendly house with a genuine warmth in which each boy can develop in a safe, secure, happy environment, acquiring a good set of values and high self-esteem.
I am honoured to be Housemaster of Matheson’s – the oldest of Glenalmond’s boarding houses. With my wife, Sarah, who is Head of Maths at a local Prep School, I hope to create a friendly, caring house, in which academic rigour, extra-curricular participation, and rest and relaxation go hand in hand Ed Phillips, Housemaster
Welcome to Matheson’s, the oldest House in the College right at the heart of Glenalmond, lying in Front Quad within a stone's throw of the library, chapel and Dining Hall.
Matheson’s boys are encouraged to set themselves high standards and respect and appreciate the different qualities and interests of others. Mathesonians feature in all aspects of College life – we have a sound academic tradition and our fair share of success in all other areas with the boys engaging enthusiastically in all they do.
We pride ourselves on the diversity of Mathesonians which we nurture, support and encourage. We aim to develop an atmosphere where all feel secure, from youngest to oldest. Prefects at the top of the house have a responsibility to support Juniors at the bottom in all aspects of House and College life. The safety and welfare of all Mathesonians is of paramount importance and all the boys must feel secure and valued. They have full and ready access to myself and the Tutors at all times, every individual matters to us. Floreat Glenalmond – Matheson’s Floreat!
Boarding education is in my blood – I attend a boarding school where my father was a school master for 32 years (6 as a Housemaster) and I was baptised as a baby in front of the school during a weekly Sunday service! I therefore fully appreciate the special community such an environment fosters.
After graduating from the University of Edinburgh, I trained as an English teacher at an academic all-girls day school in Surrey, before moving to teach English at a boarding school in Berkshire. During my time there I took on the role of Assistant Head of English, House Tutor, Head of Cricket and Head of Core Skills. I also coached rugby, as well as the odd bit of netball! A keen supporter of Harlequins Rugby Club, my interests include nearly all sports. However, when not on the sports field, I enjoy going to the theatre, a good boxset, and a captivating book… of course!
