Learning For Life (fomerly known as PSHCE) education is an important subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future.
These skills and attributes help pupils to stay healthy and safe and prepare them for life and work in the modern world. Learning For Life education helps pupils to achieve their academic potential and leave school equipped with the skills they will need throughout later life. It also helps pupils to develop the knowledge and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. From making responsible decisions about alcohol to succeeding in their first job, Learning For Life education helps pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up.
A growing body of research shows that pupils who are emotionally healthy do better at school. Learning For Life education helps children and young people to achieve their potential by supporting their wellbeing and tackling issues that can affect their ability to learn, such as anxiety, unhealthy relationships and issues of increasing complexity such as those related to mental health and staying safe, both online and offline. Learning For Life education also helps pupils to develop skills and aptitudes - like teamwork, communication, and resilience - that are crucial to navigating the challenges and opportunities of the modern world, and which are increasingly valued by employers.
Second - Fifth Form
At Glenalmond College, all pupils have one Learning For Life lesson or presentation per fortnight. In Second to Fifth Form, the pupils are taught in a classroom situation using a wide range of learning styles with an emphasis on interactive learning and the teacher as a facilitator. Guest speakers are also invited to talk to the Juniors throughout the year.
Sixth Form
In Sixth Form, we move to more presentation based learning and we invite guest speakers from all walks of life to inspire, educate and challenge the pupils. In the Lent term we put on a round robin of practical sessions for our Upper Sixth dealing with issues such as car maintenance, cooking on a budget, relaxation etc.
The Learning For Life programme is a work in progress and will change according to the needs of the pupils however I believe that it is a hugely important subject and one which should have a positive impact on the lives of all our pupils.
