The Golf School at Glenalmond provides a development pathway for all standards of golfer, from beginners through to the most talented of players with aspirations of competing at the highest level.
Run by PGA Professional Andrew Todd, the aim of the Golf School is to deliver an individualised programme blending the latest technology with expert coaching. Our Golf Hub provides an indoor facility which ensures lessons can take place all year round, and we use our very own 9-hole, James Braid designed nine-hole golf course for additional lessons, internal school competitions and school matches.
Lessons will run throughout the year, in conjunction with the academic calendar. Pupils will be supported to grow as athletes, with a real focus on working with the strengths they have to develop them as golfers. Our Strength and Conditioning programme allow pupils to supplement their practice, with golf specific strength-based movements, accelerating their development in the sport.
Our Golf Hub features two hitting bays, both fitted with Flightscope. These provide an opportunity for pupils to hit balls and see simulated ball flights, play simulated golf courses, and receive lessons using key performance golf swing and ball flight data, from Flightscope.
Our Golf Hub also features a 5-hole, Astroturf putting green, which can be used for putting and chipping practice.

Our James Braid-designed, nine-hole golf course is also known by the name ‘Cairnies’. The course has stood for a long time and features an excellent layout of holes, mixing par 3’s, 4’s and 5’s into a varied nine-hole course, with a Par of 35. Cairnies is also a measured course, measured by Scottish Golf. All pupils are given membership, which enables them to play for their handicap year-round. Cairnies is used for friendly fixtures against other schools, throughout the year.

Our on site gym features top-of-the-range equipment and is managed by Head of Strength and Conditioning, Paul Wilkinson. It plays host to our Strength & Conditioning programme, to which pupils in Tier One and Two of the Golf School have access.

The tiered system within our Golf School enables pupils to work in a tier best suited to their individual needs. Outlined below are the tiers and an outline of what each pupil will receive in each respective one. Pupils are allocated into tiers based on discussion between our Head of Golf and each individual pupil. Among factors considered are, pupils’ goals, current level of ability, desire to undertake strength and conditioning sessions, school timetable and any additional sports the pupil participates in during their time at Glenalmond.

Within the School, pupils are encouraged to use our nine-hole course as much as they can, to play in our internal Order of Merit competitions, scores which do count for pupils' handicaps. The main opportunities for play in these events are on Saturday afternoons, and Sundays, particularly during the winter months. In the summer term, as daylight starts to extend, there is also opportunity for pupils to play on the golf course in the evenings, and during co-curricular activity time as well.
For our better players, Glenalmond College endeavour to enter as many competitions as possible in order to support their ambitions. In addition to a range of friendly fixtures held both at home and away throughout the school year, Glenalmond regularly play in competitive schools tournaments including SWIFTS Golf, ISGA and Dunhill Schools. We are also kindly hosted for matches against our Old Glenalmond Golfers Society, and these regularly take place at courses including Prestwick, Muirfield, Elie, St Andrews Old Course and Bruntsfield Links.
Over the years, Glenalmond has facilitated the development of thousands of golfers by allowing them the opportunity to practice, play, develop friendships and healthy rivalries during their time at Coll. We can point to our Old Glenalmond Golfing Society (OGGS) which boasts a very healthy and active membership, along with a busy golf and social calendar. Current and former pupils at the School are warmly invited to join, participate, and make connections, which will serve them well throughout their lives in both professional and personal capacities, regardless of golfing ability.
The Glenalmond Golf School can point to the development of many of our OGGS, as well as golfers at the elite end of the game. Ladies European Tour Player Carly Booth attended Glenalmond on a Scholarship, and we are extremely proud of everything Carly has gone on to achieve in her career in the game. OG Will Porter combined academics and golf. Will left Coll on a Scholarship to Chattanooga University in Tennessee, where he spent four years further developing his game, and he now competes on the PGA EuroPro Tour in events across Europe.
Whilst a Glenalmond pupil, Violette Mir won the Dunhill Schools Championship at Carnoustie Links, the Independent Schools North East Championships at Goswick Golf Club and was selected to represent the Under 18’s French Girls Team, at the European Team Championships - an excellent achievement of which everyone at Glenalmond is immensely proud.
